Whale Songs
Voice of the Whale was
inspired by a recording of actual humpback whale songs. These
songs have the following characteristics:
- The sounds are in three ranges:
high, low, and a more complex modulating sound.
- There are seven basic types described
variously as moans, cries, chirps, yups, snores, growls,
whistles, etc.
- The completed song not sung until
the autumn before migration to the tropics.
- Only males produce complete songs
and these are associated with mating.
- Each whale has a distinct song.
- Songs from one whale will vary
slightly from year to year.
