Whale Songs

Voice of the Whale was inspired by a recording of actual humpback whale songs. These songs have the following characteristics:

  • The sounds are in three ranges: high, low, and a more complex modulating sound.
  • There are seven basic types described variously as moans, cries, chirps, yups, snores, growls, whistles, etc.
  • The completed song not sung until the autumn before migration to the tropics.
  • Only males produce complete songs and these are associated with mating.
  • Each whale has a distinct song.
  • Songs from one whale will vary slightly from year to year.
