Fall Update 2001

Task Force discussions and projects

Assessment and Evaluation Task Force

A final draft of the survey developed at the 2001 symposium was reviewed by the task force in early October. Plans were made to complete a cover letter and sample versions of completed surveys by October 12. The survey and cover letter will be posted on the ACS web site and publicity for the survey will be handled by the campus IF teams. Collection of the data will be done via the web form. Analysis of the data will start in December with the goal of having a report to distribute to the other task forces in time for the symposium to be held on February 15 and 16, 2002.

Collaboration Task Force

The task force has drafted a proposal for mini grants to be given to ACS members to encourage inter institutional collaboration. This proposal is in line with the Coordinating Committee's interest in encouraging ACS campuses to work together to spread information about information fluency as well as to encourage more participants in the projects.

The proposal will provide guidelines for short term grants to assist those participants interested in visiting other campuses to learn about information fluency projects. Participants will also be able to provide expertise to other groups setting up similar projects.

Pedagogy and Curriculum Development Task Force

The task force had drafted a short document at the 2001 symposium which was seen as distilling the general guidelines provided by the Guidelines Task Force into a more manageable set of outcomes for use in the classroom. The task force is now collecting feedback from the other task forces on their document and will refine the outcomes for presentation at the 2002 symposium. Questions being asked of the task forces include:

  1. How well does this document connect with the work of the other task forces?
  2. What is missing from this document that is important to the task forces' work?
  3. Is there anything that conflicts with what the other groups are doing?

Promotion and Modeling Task Force

The task force is working on collecting useful articles on information fluency for the group to review as part of a larger project to design a best practices database. The group will also look at the 2001 ACS Information Fluency grant projects for ideas on what should be collected in the database. A draft design of the database will be presented at the 2002 symposium.
