Mellon Teaching with Technology Planning Grant Report
This project aims to integrate web-based materials into a cognitive psychology course to enhance student interest and understanding. With the support of a Mellon Teaching with Technology Planning Grant, I visited and sorted through a number of web sites related to cognitive psychology. I have begun to incorporate a number of these sites into my 200-level cognitive psychology course; some links are provided in the course schedule [http://www.sewanee.edu/Psychology/Psyc208/Psyc208DailySchedule.html] (as out-of-class assignments for students), while others are provided on a separate page of course-related links [http://www.sewanee.edu/Psychology/Psyc208/Psyc208Links.html] for leisurely student exploration.
This project is ongoing: web-based activities and articles continue to be added (and deleted) from the course based on changes in course content, the availability of updated information and relevant web sites, and student reactions. Materials currently in use can be found on the course web site [http://www.sewanee.edu/Psychology/Psyc208/], particularly on the course schedule [http://www.sewanee.edu/Psychology/Psyc208/Psyc208DailySchedule.html] and course-related links pages [http://www.sewanee.edu/Psychology/Psyc208/Psyc208Links.html]. These pages are frequently updated to reflect any changes in course content and/or materials.
The Planning Grant has also enabled me to begin to evaluate the available web-based laboratory activities that might be suitable for this course. Some of these can be found on the course schedule [http://www.sewanee.edu/Psychology/Psyc208/Psyc208DailySchedule.html] and course-related links pages [http://www.sewanee.edu/Psychology/Psyc208/Psyc208Links.html] of the course web site; others are still being evaluated in terms of their suitability for the course.
Fall 2001 will provide the first reasonable semester for careful assessment of the current set of web-based materials, as some of these materials were still being compiled and evaluated during Fall 2000. (The course is taught during the fall semester of each academic year.)
I welcome any comments, suggestions, and/or questions about this on-going endeavor! (kyu@sewanee.edu) Stay tuned for further updates....
