Multi Disciplinary Statistics Web Site
Submitted by Dr. Connie Campbell and Dr. Carolee Larsen
Millsaps College
Project Outline:
Our proposal is to design, develop, and implement a Multi Disciplinary Statistics Web Site. Resources available at the web site would include tutorials, lecture notes, discipline specific applications, practice tests, links to "real life" data sets, and presentations. Such a site would prove to be useful for students and teachers of statistics from many disciplines. It is our vision that once the web site is in place we will invite other institutions in the consortium to contribute links to materials they have either produced, or found particularly useful.
Motivation for the project:
Millsaps College (as many institutions) offers elementary statistics and
applied methodology classes in several disciplines. As a mathematics
teacher, Connie Campbell and a social science methods teacher, Carolee
Larsen we have realized that there is tremendous overlap in several of these
different courses and they could very well be served by a set of common
resources. We have each independently designed a webpage for our statistics
classes (See www.millsaps.edu/~campbcm/1150,
and www.millsaps.edu/www/socio/methstat.htm)
and would like to pool together our ideas and abilities to develop a cross
discipline resource for statistics. An ACS Mellon grant would afford us the
opportunity to pursue this project which we believe will prove to be
beneficial to many disciplines at all ACS institutions. While this project
would include resources and materials we have already produced, we would
also work on developing new ideas with a focus on the use of statistics in
various disciplines.
Time line:
We would begin planning and developing web site components immediately and would begin development and implementation of the actual site in the Summer of ‘99.
Technical Requirements and Institutional Support:
Web site components would be produced using Authorware, Director, RealMedia, and Question Mark. Millsaps has provided us with access to all of this software. We are already have a working knowledge of Authorware and Director and are in the process of learning about RealMedia and Question Mark. Server space would also be provided by Millsaps College.
Integration into the Curriculum:
As components are produced, they will be introduced into statistics classes at Millsaps to identify their usefulness (as well as any needs for improvement).
Mechanism for Assessment:
Students and peers from Millsaps will be asked to evaluate the usefulness of each component both before and after the project is completed. However, upon completion of the project we will also ask for feedback from faculty of other ACS institutions. This will not only serve to evaluate (and solicit improvement ideas), it will also heighten awareness as to the project.
Long Range Goal:
It is our vision that this collaborative effort will be a beginning, not an end. Once the initial web page has been set up, we will encourage others to submit links to projects they have developed. Our goal is that the site will evolve into a valuable resource characterized by joint ownership from ACS faculty from many different disciplines.
