Computer Interfaced Experiments for Introductory Physics

Interim Report, January 9, 1998
Bill Crummett
Centre College

During the fall term six new experiments were implemented into General Physics I laboratories. These experiments utilized the Pasco Series 700 interface with motion, force, and rotary motion sensors. New laboratory write-ups were developed to explain the physics involved in each experiment and to guide students through the exercise. The college selected the Excel spreadsheet package rather than Quattro. Therefore, these write-ups and three others included instructions about using Excel.

All the experiments worked better than satisfactory and were well received by the students. A student survey was devised and administered. The results of this survey will be tabulated during the January-February winter term. Corrections and improvements to the write-ups have been documented and will also be made during the winter term.

A paper was presented at the American Association of Physics Teacher's meeting in New Orleans on January 7, 1998. The paper was well received and will also be presented at the spring meeting of the Kentucky Association of Physics Teachers.
