NEWS

1. ENVIRONMENTAL GRANTS AVAILABLE

Environmental grants from $500 to $3000 are available again this year for curriculum development, campus-community partnerships, student teaching assistantships, and environmental internships. 2. NEW ROLLING DEADLINE FOR STUDENT DEVELOPMENT AND ENGAGEMENT ALLIANCE

The Student Development and Engagement Alliance now has a rolling deadline for proposals in both categories: student internships and teaching assistantships. For more information, please see the SDE rfp at http://www.colleges.org/enviro/proposals/SDE_RFP_0607.pdf.

3. SEMESTER IN TURKEY FALL 2007

The Global Partners Semester in Turkey Program is currently taking applications for the fall of 2007. Since 2001, this unique program has offered students an opportunity to study in both Istanbul and Ankara and includes a week long field trip in western Turkey. The program is open to students in all disciplines, including the natural sciences. All classes are conducted in English. Kathy Kamp and John Whitaker of Grinnell College will be the academic directors for our Fall 2007 program. The program will be managed for ACS by Birmingham-Southern College, and Merih Griswold. 4. TEACHING AND LEARNING WORKSHOP

The dates for this year's ACS Teaching and Learning Workshop are June 5-10, 2007. Held each year at Rollins College in Winter Park FL, the workshop is designed for good teachers who want to hone their craft and build a culture of excellent teaching on their respective campuses. Both senior and junior faculty from all disciplines will have the opportunity to receive feedback on their teaching, trade ideas and techniques, and discuss the unique pedagogical challenges and opportunities of the liberal arts environment. If you are interested in attending this year's workshop, please contact your academic dean or provost who will then nominate you for participation. We will be notifying faculty members of their participation by March 1. 5. DIVERSITY MINI-GRANTS FOR STUDENT LED COLLABORATION WITH FACULTY/STAFF AVAILABLE

ACS students in collaboration with faculty/staff are invited to submit proposals that address diversity issues/concerns that affect and challenge campus climates. Final submission deadline for proposals is February 9, 2007. 6. WORKSHOP MINI-GRANTS FOR CAMPUS DIVERSITY LEADERSHIP MODELS AVAILABLE

Mini-grants are available to help host a campus workshop to develop on-going campus models that promote staff, faculty and student diversity leadership. The final submission deadline is February 2, 2007. 7. DIVERSITY WORKSHOP AT MOREHOUSE COLLEGE

As a part of our ACS Diversity Initiative, a “Conversation with Minority Faculty,” a faculty development workshop is being hosted February 9th and 10th at Morehouse College. Each Dean is encouraged to nominate a minority faculty member for participation. For further information, contact Marcia White, mwhite@colleges.org.

8. ACS CHIEF FINANCIAL OFFICERS MEETING

ACS Chief Financial Officers (CFO’s) will meet at Centre College, March 28-30, 2007. For further meeting information please contact John Cuny at cuny@centre.edu or Marcia White at mwhite@colleges.org.

9. CALL FOR PAPERS FOR ACS BRITISH STUDIES STUDENT SYMPOSIUM

The Fifth Annual ACS British Studies Student Symposium will be held on February 16-17, 2007 at Hendrix College in Conway Arkansas. Proposals should be 100 words for presentations by good-quality students on topics relating to British culture and history from antiquity to the present. Of special interest is interdisciplinary projects; but the primary emphasis ix on the quality of student scholarship. The deadline for submission is Friday, January 12, 2007. 10. FIFTEENTH ANNUAL LATIN AMERICAN STUDIES SYMPOSIUM

The Fifteenth Annual Latin American Studies Symposium hosted by Birmingham-Southern College is scheduled for March 30-31, 2007. This inter- and multi-disciplinary event is a unique opportunity for _undergraduate_ students to present their research in a professional setting. The BSC LAS Symposium has grown to become one of the largest of its kind, with students from over 30 colleges and universities participating last year. The Symposium has attracted renowned and engaging keynote speakers, and the event has become a rich opportunity for students and faculty to discuss a wide range of topics in Latin American Studies.

We hope you will encourage your students to submit a one-page abstract of their original research paper. All topics from any discipline pertaining to Latin America are welcome. Papers may be submitted in English, Spanish or Portuguese. Please visit http://www.bsc.edu/academics/las/symposium.htm to submit an abstract, and for further information regarding registration, the accommodation, and keynote speaker.

The deadline for submission is January 29, 2007. We invite faculty members accompanying their students to serve as panel chair and discussants.

11. COSTA RICA FACULTY DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM

Again this summer, Rollins College is organizing and hosting a seminar in Costa Rica for faculty members of Global Partners Project institutions. Rollins is generously subsidizing almost half of the expenses of the seminar to significantly reduce costs for participants. Applications are due no later than February 1, 2007.
