CONTENTS for November 30, 1999 1. ACS Environmental Initiative Call for Proposals
------------------------------------------------ ACS ENVIRONMENTAL INIITIATIVE CALL FOR PROPOSALS Through the ACS environmental initiative, $30,000 remains available for this academic year ('99-'00). This initiative is designed to foster collaboration in environmental studies and activities among faculty, staff and students at the fifteen member institutions of ACS. The program encompasses collaborative efforts in course development, collaborative research, campus outreach and service and campus operations. Other funds are also available in support of campus operations, information dissemination, the environmental lecture series and faculty/staff consortium visits and consulting. For specific information, please visit http://www.colleges.org/~enviro/ or call or email Bob Whyte, Director of Environmental Programs at 404-636-4821, rswhyte@colleges.org. INTERDISCIPLINARY STATISTICS WEB SITE AUTHORS SEEK FEEDBACK As part of the ACS Technology Fellowship Program, Carolee Larsen and Connie Campbell of Millsaps College have developed a Multi-Disciplinary Statistics website. The purpose of the site is to offer a resource for students and teachers of statistics from a variety of disciplines. They have geared the site towards topics which would typically be covered in an introductory statistics class and would welcome feedback from members of the consortium. Please visit the site at http://www.millsaps.edu/www/socio/statsresources.htm and let them know what you think. If you have (or are aware of) other resources which would enhance the project, please let them know. TRAVEL ABROAD SEMINAR IN ASSISI, ITALY, JULY 7-14, 2000 A summer travel seminar, "Pilgrimage to Assisi", will be offered through the Center for Spirituality and Sustainability (CSS, sponsored by the ACS Environmental Program). Faculty, staff and students from ACS schools will have an opportunity to travel to Italy to study Franciscan spirituality and particpate in programs on sustainable development, and earth ethics. This program is being offered through CSS in cooperation with the Center for Respect of Life and Environment and St. Thomas University (Miami, FL). For additional information, please contact Jay McDaniel at Hendrix College, 501-450-1366, or email at mcdaniel@hendrix.edu. FACULTY DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITY IN TURKEY The tri-consortial "Global Partners" program (comprised of ACS, Assoc. Colleges of the Midwest and the Great Lake Colleges Association) plans to send 9 faculty members (3 from each consortium) to the The Council on International Educational Exchange's travel seminar "Transformations in Turkey: Economics, Polity, and Religion." All seminar-related expenses will be covered for successful applicants. Dates are set for June 11-22, 2000. For selection criteria and an application form, please visit http://www.41colleges.org/opportunities/. For more information, contact the ACS office, acs@colleges.org or 404-636-9533. ACS BIOLOGIST'S WEB SITE FEATURED IN _SCIENCE_ MAGAZINE Immunology animations created by Davidson biologist Malcolm Campbell as part of his ACS Technology Fellowship have been mentioned as a "hot site" in the latest edition of _Science_, which reports: "Immuno flicks. The body's immune response involves a complex choreography of specialized cells. To help students understand these ideas, this site features Shockwave movies of steps such as somatic recombination, antigen loading, and B cell maturation. Also check out the histology atlas that lets you zoom in on immune cells in a slice of thymus or bone marrow." Be sure to visit Campbell's site at http://www.bio.davidson.edu/Biology/Courses/Bio307.html TECHNOLOGY FELLOWS AND WORKSHOPS SELECTED ACS is pleased to announce our new Technology Fellows for Spring and Summer 2000.
