CONTENTS for November 26, 2003 News 1. Hendrix Professor receives U.S. Professor of the Year Award Opportunities 4. Grant Funds Available for ACS Environmental Programs -------------------------------------- 1. HENDRIX PROFESSOR RECEIVES U.S PROFESSOR OF THE YEAR AWARD Dr. Thomas E. Goodwin, professor of chemistry at Hendrix, received the U.S. Professor of the Year Award from the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education on Nov. 13, in Washington, D.C. at a luncheon at the National Press Club. The Professor of the Year program honors teachers in four categories
at the national level. Dr. Goodwin is the award recipient in the Undergraduate
College category. As one of Hendrix's outstanding faculty for nearly three
decades, he is an excellent choice for this honor. A dedicated teacher,
a caring mentor and a respected researcher, Dr. Goodwin was a co-recipient
of an ACS Environmental Awareness Grant in 2002-2003. You'll find more details on the Hendrix Website: http://www.hendrix.edu 2. ACS FACULTY STATE WINNERS FOR PROFESSORS OF THE YEAR Greg Miller, Professor of English at Millsaps College, and Elizabeth Mansfield, Associate Professor of Art History at the University of the South, were named 2003 Professors of the Year for their respective states. Congratulations to both of them on this wonderful recognition. 3. STUDENT DEVELOPMENT AND ENGAGEMENT ALLIANCE AWARDS GRANTS The Student Development and Engagement (SDE) Alliance received 13 grant proposals for their October 31st deadline, many of which were submitted by ACS Environmental Interns. A total of 10 proposals were awarded funds. For recipient names, campuses, and more information on these grants, please see the SDE website at http://sde.wlu.edu. The next round of SDE Alliance grants will have a deadline of February 27th. OPPORTUNITIES 4. GRANT FUNDS AVAILABLE FOR ACS ENVIRONMENTAL PROGRAMS *The Campus as a Laboratory for Sustainability Alliance (CLS) announces the availability of funds for grants that promote energy conservation, recycling, campus design/redesign, landscaping, transportation, campus audits, minimization and treatment of waste products, green purchasing and rebuilding standards (including LEED certification.) Grant funding will also be considered for campus-community partnership projects. The deadline for proposals is December 1, 2003 by 5 p.m. EST. availability of funds for grants for curriculum development in courses
dealing with environmental sustainability, emphasizing support for innovative
interdisciplinary and inter-institutional collaboration in course development.
The deadline is December 15, 2003 by 5pm EST. If 5. TEACH TOGETHER VIA TECHNOLOGY Have you ever dreamed about team-teaching with a colleague on another ACS campus, but wondered how you would do it? The ACS Technology Center will be holding a seminar in June, 2004 for individuals and teams who want to learn more about inter-campus teaching in the liberal arts. Seasoned faculty and staff, all veterans of team-taught web courses, will demonstrate the faculty-friendly Course Delivery System software developed at the ACSTC, and offer advice on designing and running such courses. There will be plenty of opportunities for hands-on practice, as well as time to work on course content. Teams are especially welcome, and we will assist in finding collaborators. The University of the South will host the second annual ACS Undergraduate Research Symposium in Classics, April 2-3, 2004. ACS faculty should encourage students to submit abstracts of research papers on topics relevant to the ancient world. All ACS students are eligible to participate, but faculty endorsements are requested. Students will deliver their papers in 15-minute presentations at the conference. The abstract deadline is February 6, 2004. ACSTC INVITES APPLICATIONS FOR THE 2004 SUMMER SOFTWARE ENGINEERING INTERNSHIPS The ACS Tech Center invites students to apply for the ACS Summer Software Engineering Internship, to be held May 30 - July 31, 2004 at the ACS Technology Center at Southwestern University. Students will receive instruction in software engineering concepts along with hands-on experience designing and coding real-world applications. They will be housed at Southwestern and will receive a $2,500 stipend. Eligible students must attend an ACS or NITLE Southern Region school and have completed 18 hours or 6 courses in Computer Science. The application deadline is January 26, 2004. JANUARY TECHNOLOGY WORKSHOPS AT CET (MIDDLEBURY, VERMONT) The Center for Educational Technology in Middlebury, Vermont will be offering four workshops in January. ACS can fill a limited number of slots at these workshops. Selection will be made on the basis of early reply to this message and previous opportunities. Airfare and lodging will be provided by ACSTC and NITLE for participants from our consortium. Application deadline is December 10. LATIN AMERICAN STUDIES SYMPOSIUM ACS and Birmingham-Southern College are pleased to invite you to the Twelfth Annual Latin American Studies Symposium which will take place at BSC April 2-3, 2004. The symposium is an UNDERGRADUATE interdisciplinary research conference on Latin America the objective of which is to promote undergraduate research and increase dialogue among faculty members. All topics pertaining to Latin America are welcome and papers can be written in English, Spanish or Portuguese. Faculty are invited to serve as panel chairs. STUDY ABROAD PROGRAMS Please encourage your students to apply for the following study abroad opportunities offered through ACS: **Global Partners Semester in Turkey Program for students. Students study the culture and history of Turkey and participate in a 7-day field trip in Western Turkey. The fall 2004 program will be led by Dr. Tom McCollough of Centre College. ACS WOMEN'S/GENDER STUDIES CONFERENCE ACS and Furman University invite you to the sixth Biennial ACS Women's Studies Conference, Gender Acts! Activism: History, Theory, Practice, at Furman University March 26-27, 2004. Keynote speakers and presentations include Sarah Weddington, lead counsel in Roe v. Wade, the Guerrilla Girls (a group of women artists whose provocative and humorous performances expose sexism in western art and history) and Spelman College Professor Gloria Wade-Gayles and the speech ensemble Resonance who perform original poetry and music based on the oral histories of African American women from the South. Don't miss the chance to hear these fascinating speakers and to come together with faculty and students from across ACS who are interested in women's and gender studies issues. SCIENCE REFORM COURSE DESIGN AND ASSESSMENT WORKSHOP Registration Deadline is December 10, 2003 for this January 10, 2004, workshop at Rollins College. All natural science faculty who (1) teach introductory science courses for non-science majors, or (2) have an interest in these courses, or (3) have an interest in applying for science reform course mini-grants are urged to let their chief academic officer know of their interest in attending this workshop. This workshop is supported by a grant from the W.M. Keck Foundation of Los Angeles.
