1999 SUMMER TEACHING WORKSHOP FOR ACS FACULTY

The annual ACS Teaching and Learning workshop at Rollins College will take place June 8-13, 1999. This challenging and invigorating workshop is intended for faculty who want to strengthen their teaching performance. Each institution is invited to send two faculty members each year. Nominations from academic deans to the workshop steering committee should be made by January 15, 1999. For more information, see http://www.colleges.org/summerteach.html or contact the Chief Academic Officer at your institution.

GENDERED ENVIRONMENTS: CFP FOR 1999 WOMEN'S STUDIES CONFERENCE

The fourth biennial ACS Women's Studies Conference will take place October 15-17, 1999 at Birmingham-Southern College. We are pleased to announce that a theme has been selected for the conference: "Gendered Environments". All ACS and non-ACS faculty, staff and students are urged to submit proposals for the conference. Students may also participate in the Conference Logo Design competition. For more information, including the Call for Proposals, Call for Designs, and submission guidelines, please see the ACS Women's Studies home page at http://www.colleges.org/~wms or contact Conference Chair Jane Archer, jarcher@bsc.edu.

CHANGES TO 1999 ACS COSTA RICA STUDY PROGRAM

Effective in 1999, there will be several changes to the ACS Sustainable Development Study Abroad program in Costa Rica. Instead of being offered during the Spring semester, the program will be offered during the summer. For more details, including contact information for interested students, please see http://www.colleges.org/costarica.html.

KIM THURLOW JOINS ACS STAFF

ACS welcomes new Assistant for Environmental Programs Kim Thurlow. Kim is a recent graduate of American University, where she majored in Environmental Studies and International Service. During her time in Washington DC, Kim worked with a number of environmental organizations dedicated to environmental education and service learning. She also spent a year working with the National Wildlife Federation's Campus Ecology program as a Mid-Atlantic campus organizer. At ACS, Kim will be primarily focusing on collaborative student initiatives within the areas of academic programs, research, service activities, and campus operations.

SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT CLINIC AT DAVIDSON COLLEGE

The Sustainable Campus Development Clinic to be held at Davidson College February 12-14, 1999 will concentrate on three specific aspects of sustainable, environmentally conscious campus design: architecture, landscaping, and transportation. Interested institutions are asked to send a team to the workshop to facilitate the implementation of strategies. It is suggested that teams be composed of two students, faculty, physical plant staff members, and one administrator from planning or business/finance. For more information, see http://www.colleges.org/~enviro/workshops or contact Kim Thurlow at kthurlow@colleges.org.

YOUR IDEAS NEEDED FOR COOPERATIVE STUDY ABROAD PROGRAMS

Now that ACS has received a small planning grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to explore collaborative study abroad possibilities with the Associated Colleges of the Midwest and the Great Lakes College Association, we need your ideas about:

  • Internships abroad
  • Service Learning
  • Technology connections with international programs
  • Possible centers abroad
  • Faculty development possibilities
  • Other ideas

Please contact Dr. Wayne Anderson with your ideas at (404) 636-9533 or wanders@colleges.org.

TWO 1999 ENVIRONMENTAL PROGRAM RFPs: DEADLINES 2/1/99 & 9/15/99

ACS invites faculty, staff, students, and administrators from all ACS institutions to submit proposals for collaborative environmental project grants made possible by funding from a major foundation. The 1999 proposal deadlines are February 1 & September 15. The purpose of these grants is to help prepare the Campus Community for environmental citizenship in the 21st century. Proposed projects should increase environmental citizenship through the systematic study of the interactions between humans and the biosphere, and the search for innovative and proactive solutions to environmental problems. Potential topics include but are not limited to: conservation of biological diversity and ecological integrity; cultural diversity and environmental justice; effects and mitigation of human action on pattern and process in biotic and abiotic systems; pollution prevention and remediation; human population and consumption; environmental and natural resource economics; environmental history, literature, and arts; environmental policy and law; ethics, values, belief systems and considerations of the global community and sustainable livelihoods.

For complete details please visit http://www.colleges.org/~enviro/proposals/rfp_1998.html or contact Bob Whyte, Director of Environmental Programs, at 404-636-4821.
