1. SUMMER INTERNSHIPS IN SOFTWARE ENGINEERING

Please encourage your students to apply for the ACS Software Engineering Internship, June 7-August 9, 2003 at the ACS Tech Center. Students will receive instruction in SE concepts along with hands-on experience designing and coding real-world applications. They will be housed in Southwestern dorms at no cost, including a meal plan. Participating students will also receive a stipend of $2500 for the program.

2. ACS LAUNCHES VIRTUAL ART GALLERY

ACS recently launched its Virtual Art Gallery. The first exhibit contains selected works from two senior art students at Millsaps College. Visit the Gallery at http://www.colleges.org/art_gallery/index.html. Other exhibits will be added periodically. ACS art faculty and art students are invited to inquire about exhibiting their work. Contact Beth Bowser, bowser@colleges.org for more information. The Virtual Art Gallery is part of the Visual Arts Initiative, which is supported by the New Dimensions Grant.


3. LOGO DESIGN CONTEST FOR ACS STUDENTS

Help spread the word about the logo design contest for the ACS Virtual Art Gallery home page. All ACS students are eligible to participate. Entry information may be accessed through the Virtual Gallery home page or go directly to http://www.colleges.org/art_gallery/logo_contest.pdf


4. ACS TO HOST LUNCH AT SOUTHEASTERN THEATRE CONFERENCE

Attending the Southeastern Theatre Conference (SETC) on March 5-9, 2003?
If so, you are invited to join us on March 6 for an ACS hosted lunch for our participating members. Reservations are required by February 15, 2003. RSVP to Beth Bowser, bowser@colleges.org or phone 404-636-9533, ext. 18.


5. ACS COURSE DELIVERY SYSTEM SOFTWARE RELEASED

The source code for version 1.0 of the ACS Course Delivery System (CDS) is now freely available for download under the GNU Public License from the CDS webpage: http://cds.colleges.org/ . This package enables systems administrators (and others with UNIX systems or who are willing to port it to other operating systems) to run their own copies of the CDS server, and make changes to the code. Version 1.0 of the CDS has been used since Fall 2002 for delivering team-taught consortial courses.


6. SUNOIKISIS ANNOUNCES ACS UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH SYMPOSIUM IN CLASSICS

Sunoikisis, the alliance of Classics departments within the ACS, will hold an undergraduate research symposium at the University of the South on April 11-12, 2003. Please encourage students to submit abstracts for 15 minute presentations on topics relevant to the ancient world. All ACS students are eligible to participate, but faculty endorsements are requested. The abstract deadline is February 1, 2002. 7. ENVIRONMENTAL PROGRAMS: CALL FOR PRESENTERS

Faculty at Spelman College seek presenters for a conference entitled "Creating change: environmental studies and the arts," to be held April 4-6 in Atlanta. For more information, please contact Lawrence Schenbeck, Associate Professor of Music History, Spelman College, lschenbe@mindspring.com.


8. ENCOUNTERING CONTEMPORARY CUBA: MARCH 2003 TRIP

An ACS sponsored trip to Cuba for students and faculty will take place March 21-30, 2003. The trip is coordinated through the Center for Global Education at Augsburg College. This will be an intense and experiential seminar that will explore a variety of topics including: health care and educational systems, organized and traditional religion, the role of women in Cuban society, economic development and environmental sustainability. Cost per participant is $1740. ACS will be able to provide partial funding to participants with priority consideration given to deserving students. First priority given to applications received by December 20, 2002.
