STUDY ABROAD PROGRAM IN TURKEY BEGINS FALL 2001 The Global Partners Semester in Turkey Program begins Fall 2001. Don't let your students miss the chance to apply for this exciting opportunity. Turkey is one of the most diverse countries in the world, with a fascinating blend of Western and Eastern cultures. This distinctive program provides ACS students the chance to study in both Istanbul and Ankara, and includes a 9-day field study trip in Western Turkey. For more information and an application: http://www.41colleges.org/turkey/studyabroad. Applications are due February 15, 2001. ACS WOMENS STUDIES CONFERENCE TO BE HELD AT HENDRIX COLLEGE ACS is pleased to announce that the 5th Biennial Women's Studies Conference will be held at Hendrix College (Conway, Arkansas) on April 13-14, 2002, with keynote speaker Dr. Oyeronke Oyewumi, author of _The Invention of Women_. The theme of the conference is "Gender Studies/Women's Studies." We will invite academic papers and panels, creative performances and pieces, and panels related to student life issues and gender. We would like to emphasize the importance of involving students from across the ACS at this conference and therefore encourage faculty to mentor their students in preparation for participation at this conference. We plan to have the call for proposals available on the ACS website soon, at http://www.colleges.org/~wms. For more information or to get involved, please contact Allison Shutt <shutt@mercury.hendrix.edu> or Karen Gaul <gaul@mercury.hendrix.edu>. STUDENT ENVIRONMENTAL LEADERSHIP TRAINING A SUCCESS Twenty student interns from thirteen ACS institutions attended the October 13-15, 2000 student intern training workshop at the Heifer Ranch in Perryville, Arkansas. The goal of this workshop was to enhance the structure and effectiveness of the ACS environmental internship program through leadership training. Interns developed skills to facilitate environmental projects on their campuses and participated in strategy sessions in which they discovered ways to capitalize on faculty, staff, administration, and student strengths. Additionally, students explored strategies for recruiting and advertising campus initiatives, and learned how to develop project ideas that appeal to their campus communities. By the end of the weekend, interns had developed a support network strengthened by an overnight stay in a simulated third world country. For more information on the ACS Environmental Interns Program, please visit http://www.colleges.org/~enviro/students or contact Cindy Stokes <stokes@colleges.org>. NINTH ANNUAL LATIN AMERICAN STUDIES SYMPOSIUM The Latin American Studies Program at Birmingham-Southern College invites proposals for panels and individual papers from outstanding undergraduate students. Papers on any topic pertaining to Latin America will be considered. For more information, visit http://panther.bsc.edu/~bdomceko/lass.htm or contact Dr. Barbara Domcekova <bdomceko@bsc.edu> or (205) 226-4975. Deadline for abstracts is January 25, 2001. SUSTAINABILITY CLINIC UPDATE The second Sustainable Campus Development Clinic (SCDC II), sponsored by the ACS Environmental Program, will be held at Emory University on November 10-12, 2000. More than a dozen ACS institutions are participating in the clinic by sending teams of 4-5 persons representing students, faculty, physical plant staff, and business administration staff. Details about the clinic, including speakers and schedule, are available at the conference web site: http://www.groupsix.com/scdc . OPPORTUNITY TO HOST INTERNATIONAL MUSICIANS Bruce Polay, Professor of Music at Knox College, offers ACS colleges the chance to host international musicians/musicologists. Later this Fall, Dr. Polay is traveling to Minsk and Moscow through a Global Partners travel grant. During his visit he will be meeting and working with world class musicians. He would like to identify ACS institutions which might be interested in hosting these musicians in 2001. If you are interested, please contact Bruce (bpolay@knox.edu) for more details. ******************************************************* The Electronic Palladian is sent several times a semester to all faculty and staff at ACS member institutions.
