1. SUCCESSFUL ENVIRONMENTAL FELLOWS & INTERNS CONFERENCE

The ACS Environmental Initiative hosted a conference for Faculty Fellows and Student Interns at Rollins College October 13-15, 2006. Twenty seven students and faculty from 12 ACS colleges and universities attended. 2. CONFERENCE/WORKSHOP PRESENTATIONS NOW ONLINE

By popular request, two of our most recent conference presentations are now available online: Rollins professor Barry Allen's "Sustainable Development: What's Up with That?" 1. ENVIRONMENTAL GRANTS AVAILABLE

Environmental grants from $500 to $3000 are available again this year for curriculum development, campus-community partnerships, student teaching assistantships, and environmental internships. 2. NEW ROLLING DEADLINE for STUDENT DEVELOPMENT AND ENGAGEMENT ALLIANCE

The Student Development and Engagement Alliance now has a rolling deadline for proposals in both categories: student internships and teaching assistantships. For more information, please see the SDE rfp at http://www.colleges.org/enviro/proposals/SDE_RFP_0607.pdf.

3. SCIENCE GRANTS AVAILABLE

Reforming Introductory Science Courses for Non-Science Majors-Final deadline for proposals is December 1, 2006. 4. WORKSHOP MINI-GRANTS FOR CAMPUS DIVERSITY LEADERSHIP MODELS AVAILABLE

These small mini-grants are available to help offset expenses associated with hosting a campus workshop to develop on-going campus models that promote staff, faculty and student diversity leadership. The final submission deadline is October 20, 2006. Information, submission guidelines and application form are posted online at http://www.colleges.org/diversity/programs/leadershipmodelsgrants.html. 5. SCIENCE REFORM AND TEACHER EDUCATION FALL WORKSHOP

The Fourth Keck Foundation Science Reform and Teacher Education Workshop will be held at Birmingham- Southern College, October 26-28. Recent grant recipients will present their projects. Prospective applicants should also attend. At this workshop we are initiating a conversation between science and education faculty to determine how to be more effective in science education. The results will be the basis for an upcoming grant proposal. Interested faculty from the sciences and education are encouraged to be a part of this conversation. This workshop is funded by the W.M. Keck Foundation of Los Angeles. For information contact Marcia White, mwhite@colleges.org.

6. SENIOR STUDENT LIFE OFFICERS MEETING

ACS Senior Student Life Officers (SSAO) will meet at Trinity University, November 12-14, 2006. Agenda highlights will include Community Service Learning Initiatives, Curricular-Co-curricular Program Development Created in Partnership with Student Affairs and Academic Affairs, Educational Models for College Student Use/Abuse of Alcohol and Drugs and Mental Health Crisis Emergency Protocols. 7. AFRICA NETWORK

Africa Network, a newly formed consortium of liberal arts institutions, invites inquiries and membership applications from ACS schools and interested scholars. The mission of the Africa Network is to develop and enhance a lasting presence for Africa in the academic programs and campus life of the nation's liberal arts institutions. 8. SEMESTER IN TURKEY FALL 2007

The Global Partners Semester in Turkey Program is currently taking applications for the fall of 2007. Since 2001, this unique program has offered students an opportunity to study in both Istanbul and Ankara and includes a week long field trip in western Turkey. The program is open to students in all disciplines, including the natural sciences. All classes are conducted in English. For more information, visit the

Eighteen students from Global Partners institutions are studying in Turkey this fall under the direction of Dr. Dan Shaw and Dr. Libby Rittenberg of Colorado College. Throughout the semester you can read more about their experiences at Dr. Shaw’s blog: http://danshawturkey.blogspot.com/.

9. TEAGLE GRANT: ASSESSMENT OF STUDY ABROAD

The first campus meetings for the project, Liberal Education and Study Abroad: Assessing Learning Outcomes to Improve Program Quality, took place in late spring 2006. These initial meetings, which included faculty, administrators and students, centered on discussions of the missions of liberal arts institutions, the goals of study abroad programs, and current assessment practices and needs. Models for assessments practices, as well as a “toolbox” of assessment instruments will be developed over the course of the grant and shared with the 42 members of the three consortia as well as with the larger higher education community.
