CONTENTS for October 23, 2003 NEWS 1) ACS Visiting Artist Exchange at Rollins OPPORTUNITIES 3) Environmental Programs - Grant Funds Available ------ 1) ACS VISITING ARTIST EXCHANGE AT ROLLINS Prof. Gloria Cook of Rollins and her sister Prof. Cynthia Lawling of Davidson completed the fall exchange program with their two-piano concert at Rollins on October 5. Included on the program was Elegy, a new composition by Rollins composer Daniel Crozier. The following day Prof. Lawling taught a masterclass in which four Rollins pianists performed. Sound files and pictures from this event are available at http://www.colleges.org/~music. 2) FEATURED INFORMATION FLUENCY PROJECT Rollins College students, working with faculty and library staff, have
created a "Business Research Resources Web Page," which includes
tutorials on such topics as business research, writing a business plan
and evaluating a company's performance. Please visit this site, funded
by the ACS Information Fluency program, at http://www.rollins.edu/olin/businessresearch/index.shtml 3) ENVIRONMENTAL PROGRAMS - GRANT FUNDS AVAILABLE **The Alliance for Student Development and Engagement (SDE) announces the availability of funds for grants that promote environmental career development, student leadership, student grants, and campus-community partnerships. Circuit Rider funds are also available to promote inter-institutional partnerships and information sharing. The first deadline for proposals is Friday October 31, 5pm Eastern Time. Please see http://sde.wlu.edu to view the Request for Proposal document and previous grant topics and proposals. For more information, contact SDE Alliance Director Helen Downes at downesh@wlu.edu. **The Curriculum and Faculty Development Alliance (CFD) announces the availability of funds for grants for curriculum development in courses dealing with environmental sustainability. These grants will provide a means for faculty to devote time and resources to create courses and refine existing courses in order to incorporate environmental themes into the curriculum. Grants will emphasize support for innovative interdisciplinary and inter-institutional collaboration in course development. Priority will be given to topics in the Humanities and to new or enhanced study abroad programs. A maximum of $2000 will be awarded per grant. The deadline for proposals is Monday, November 15, 5pm Eastern Time. The Alliance will announce its decisions by Monday, December 1. The Alliance would like to encourage all ACS faculty to apply. For more information, please contact alliance director Barry Allen at ballen@rollins.edu or 407-646-2647. 4) ENVIRONMENTAL PROGRAMS - STUDENT SUSTAINABLE LEADERSHIP WORKSHOP PLANNED The Alliance for Student Development and Engagement (SDE) is making plans to host its Third Annual Student Sustainable Leadership Workshop is tentatively scheduled for the weekend of April 17, 2004 in Atlanta, Georgia. The SDE workshop will be held in conjunction with the ACS Student Environmental Research conference, in an attempt to support environmental research and activism across ACS campuses. The Alliance would like to encourage any ACS student to participate. The goal of the workshop is to promote sharing of ideas and projects, and generate new ideas that further environmental awareness on ACS campuses. Please encourage your students to apply for the following study abroad opportunities offered through ACS: **Global Partners Semester in Turkey Program for students. Students study in Istanbul and Ankara and participate in a 7-day field trip in Western Turkey. The fall 2004 program will be led by Dr. Tom McCollough of Centre College. Supported, managed and taught by Rollins College faculty, the program also includes faculty from Trinity University. Dates for this year's program are June 7th through July 19th, 2004. Activism: History, Theory, Practice, at Furman University March 26-27, 2004. Keynote speakers and presentations include Sarah Weddington, lead counsel in Roe v. Wade, the Guerrilla Girls (a group of women artists whose provocative and humorous performances expose sexism in western art and history) and Spelman College Professor Gloria Wade-Gayles and the speech ensemble Resonance who perform original poetry and music based on the oral histories of African American women from the South. Don't miss the chance to hear these fascinating speakers and to come together with faculty and students from across ACS who are interested in women's and gender studies issues. Held each year at Rollins College in Winter Park FL, the workshop provides faculty from all disciplines an opportunity to hone teaching skills, explore new teaching techniques, and discuss pedagogical issues.
