1) TEACHING AND LEARNING WORKSHOP DATES ANNOUNCED

The dates for the 2003 ACS Teaching and Learning Workshop are June 3-8. Held each year at Rollins College in Winter Park FL, the workshop provides faculty from all disciplines an opportunity to hone teaching skills, explore new teaching techniques, and discuss pedagogical issues. If you are interested in attending this year's workshop, please contact your academic dean or provost. 2) ENVIRONMENTAL PROGRAMS - REQUEST FOR PROPOSALS

Environmental Programs request proposals for grants from faculty, staff, and students for the following: learning about external grant application procedures; campus consciousness raising; curriculum and faculty development in traditional environmental studies courses, international courses, and arts and humanities courses; workshops in arts and humanities; the creation of campus-community partnerships including service learning projects; student leadership; career development programs; green building and design projects; and recycling and other physical plant projects. 3) ENVIRONMENTAL WORKSHOP AT BIRMINGHAM-SOUTHERN COLLEGE

The Campus as a Lab for Sustainability (CLS) Alliance will host a workshop at Birmingham-Southern College in Birmingham, Alabama October 25-27th, 2002. Participants include representatives to the CLS Alliance from 13 ACS campuses, as well as all ACS Facilities Fellows. Panel discussions are planned on green developments in the southeast, LEED buildings, rain gardens and xeriscaping. Participants will also discuss special green projects on their own campuses. 5) ENCOUNTERING CONTEMPORARY CUBA: MARCH 2003 TRIP

An ACS sponsored trip to Cuba for students and faculty will take place March 22-30, 2003. The trip is coordinated through the Center for Global Education at Augsburg College. This will be an intense and experiential seminar that will explore a variety of topics including: health care and educational systems, organized and traditional religion, the role of women in Cuban society, economic development and environmental sustainability. Cost per participant is $1695. ACS will be able to provide partial funding to participants with priority going to deserving students.

6) LATIN AMERICAN STUDIES SYMPOSIUM

Students and faculty should begin planning now to participate in the 11th Annual Latin American Studies Symposium, April 4-5, 2003 at Birmingham-Southern College. Students can submit a one-page abstract for a paper involving original research. All topics pertaining to Latin America are welcome. Papers in English, Spanish or Portuguese will be considered. Faculty members are invited to accompany their students to serve as panel chairs and discussants. Proposal Deadline: February 15, 2003. 7) ORPHEUS ALLIANCE ANNOUNCES SECOND STUDENT COMPOSITION CONTEST

The Orpheus Alliance announces its second Student Composition Contest for undergraduate composers at ACS institutions. Guidelines for entry are available at: http://www.colleges.org/~music/ACScontest.html. The winning compositions will be featured in the ACS New Music Festival, to be held July 17-22, 2003 at the ACS Technology Center at Southwestern University. The panel of judges will be headed by Pulitzer Prize winning composer and pianist William Bolcom who is the Ross Lee Finney Distinguished University Professor and Acting Chair of the University of Michigan School of Music.

8) SUMMER INTERNSHIPS FOR COMPUTER SCIENCE STUDENTS

Please encourage your students to apply for the ACS Software Engineering Internship, which will run from June 7-August 9, 2003 at the ACS Technology Center. Students will receive instruction in SE concepts along with hands-on experience designing and coding real-world applications. They will be housed in Southwestern dorms at no cost, and a meal plan is included. Participating students will also receive a stipend of $2500 for the program. 9) IF GRANTS AVAILABLE FOR CAMPUS ACTIVITIES

Grants of up to $1200 are now available for promoting Information Fluency discussions or related activities that foster collaboration among faculty, librarians, information technologists and students on ACS campuses.
