The Electronic Palladian News and Opportunities for ACS Faculty and Staff From the Associated Colleges of the South http://www.colleges.org *******************************************************
CONTENTS for October 11, 1999
------------------------------------------------ ACS WOMEN'S STUDIES CONFERENCE: GENDERED ENVIRONMENTS. OCT. 15-17 AT BIRMINGHAM-SOUTHERN COLLEGE Don't miss the fourth biennial ACS Women's Studies Conference, to take place October 15-17, 1999 at Birmingham-Southern College. Keynote speakers are Winona LaDuke, an internationally-renowned Native American Indian activist and advocate for environmental, women's and children's rights, and Lois Marie Gibbs, founder of the Center For Health, Environment and Justice. More information about the conference and a registration form can be found at <http://www.colleges.org/~wms/conf99.html>. RESEARCHERS NEEDED FOR ACS ARCHAEOLOGY PROGRAM The ACS Archaeology project is an international, multi-disciplinary, research project to reconstruct the history of human activity in an upland basin in southwestern Turkey. ACS faculty from geosciences, biology, classical studies and archaeology currently participate in the project. Research opportunities are available for ACS faculty in anthropology and botany. As part of our research design, we are interested in doing anthropological and ethnographic work on the recent inhabitants of the basin, especially the nomadic herdsmen. We also wish to study the flora of the basin, both ancient and modern; central to the study of the paleo-environment of the basin is the collection and analysis of ancient pollen samples. Researchers on the project are encouraged to bring undergraduate students from their institutions. These students are able to participate in a wide variety of research designs under the direction of ACS faculty. Each Spring we offer an on-line course that gives students background on archaeology of ancient southwestern Turkey and our own work in the region. The project is heavily invested in exploring the potentials of information technology in the collection, analysis, publication and teaching of archaeological and anthropological data. Interested faculty can contact the project director, Mark B. Garrison of Trinity University, 210-999-7648, mgarriso@trinity.edu. BALTIC WATER ISSUES CONFERENCE SPONSORED BY THE UNIVERSITY OF GEORGIA The European Center of Georgia, based at the University of Georgia, is planning a conference next spring on the subject of the Baltic region, highlighting water-related environmental issues. Conference organizers are seeking presenters interested in participating in the conference, which they expect to be held in one of the Baltic countries. For more information, please contact the ACS office, (404) 636-9533 or acs.colleges.org. TWO ACS ENVIRONMENTAL CONFERENCES TO BE HELD IN NOVEMBER AT THE UNIVERSITY OF THE SOUTH The University of the South will host 2 ACS workshops next month. Participants will be provided with travel expenses and room and board while at the workshop. Call or e-mail Bob Whyte, Director of Environmental Programs for more information: (404) 636-4821, rswhyte@colleges.org or visit the ACS Environmental Programs Workshop Page at <http://www.colleges.org/~enviro/workshops/>. INFORMATION FLUENCY SYMPOSIUM AT ACS TECHNOLOGY CENTER NOV. 19-21 Plans for the symposium on Information Fluency at the ACS Technology Center are progressing nicely, with most ACS institutions having registered teams comprised of library staff, IT staff and faculty. Our keynote speaker will be David Brown, Vice President & Dean of Int'l Center for Computer Enhanced Learning (ICCEL), Wake Forest University. For more information about this event, please visit <http://www.colleges.org/techcenter/workshop/info_fluency.html>.
