The Electronic Palladian News and Opportunities for ACS Faculty and Staff From the Associated Colleges of the South http://www.colleges.org *******************************************************
CONTENTS for October 1, 2000 1. Faculty Development Seminar
In Turkey ------------------------------------------------ FACULTY DEVELOPMENT SEMINAR IN TURKEY Through the Global Partners Project we are pleased to once again be able to send ACS faculty members to The Council on International Educational Exchange's travel seminar "Economics, Polity, and Religion in Turkey". This seminar will take place June 10-21, 2001. The seminar fee and expenses will be covered for successful applicants. Selection criteria and an application are now available at: http://www.41colleges.org/turkey/seminar.html. For further information, contact Teresa Wise, Director of International Programs, twise@colleges.org. TECHNOLOGY FELLOWSHIP APPLICATIONS AND WORKSHOP PROPOSALS DUE OCTOBER 16 The ACS Technology Program will again make available a limited number of Technology Fellowships for spring and summer 2001. These $2500 stipends are intended to provide support for faculty and staff who are developing technology-based curricular materials that can be shared with colleagues at other ACS institutions. For more information and an application, see http://www.colleges.org/techcenter/fellowships.html. October 16 is also the deadline for spring and summer technology workshop proposals. For more details, see http://www.colleges.org/techcenter/workshop/proposal.html. CALL FOR ENVIRONMENTAL CITIZENSHIP PROPOSALS The ACS Environmental Program is pleased to announce a Call for Proposals for the 2000-01 academic year. The purpose of these grants is to help prepare our campus communities, with a focus on the student, for environmental citizenship in the 21st century. The projects must be collaborative in nature and extend across institutions. These grants are made possible by funding from a major foundation, and $200,000 is available in the current funding cycle for projects, not to exceed $30,000 per project, per year. Projects may be proposed in one or more of the following areas -- priority will be given to projects linking two or more areas: Course Development, Research, Service, and Campus Operations. Proposals to implement small-scale projects (up to $5,000) that demonstrate and enhance energy usage on campus are also welcome under the Environmental Citizenship umbrella. For additional information on guidelines, proposal content and format and the review process, please visit the Funding Opportunities page on the ACS Environmental Studies web site (http://www.colleges.org/~enviro/). Questions or comments may be addressed to your institution's ACS Environmental Program Committee member or to Damon Waitt (waittd@colleges.org), Director of Environmental Programs. SUSTAINABLE CAMPUS DEVELOPMENT CLINIC II The ACS Environmental Program wishes to extend an invitation to its member institutions to attend the second Sustainable Campus Development Clinic (SCDC II) at Emory University, November 10-12, 2000. Co-sponsored by the Associated Colleges of the South and Emory University, this workshop will address such issues as sustainable building design, sustainable landscaping practices, campus recycling and waste initiatives, and cross-campus team building. A "team" approach is a critical component of this workshop, and the ACS encourages each institution to assemble a team of 4-5 persons representing students, faculty, physical plant staff, and business administration staff. Your institution's ACS Environmental Fellow can assist you in assembling your team. Details about the clinic, including speakers and schedule, are available at the conference web site (http://www.groupsix.com/scdc). Once your team is assembled, we request that you make arrangements for registration, travel and accommodations no later than Friday October 27, 2000. Travel expenses and hotel accommodations for ACS participants will be covered by ACS. Registration: Each participant from your institution must register for the conference at http://www.groupsix.com/scdc/reg-acs.htm by October 27, 2000. Travel: Contact Barbara Fishman (bfaits@mindspring.com) at Academy travel, (770) 487-9157 to make your airline reservations. Keep in mind when making your reservations that physical plant and business administration members of the team need to be at the Emory Conference Center Hotel by 1 PM on Friday, November 10. All other members of the Team should be at the Emory Conference Center Hotel by 6 PM on Friday. Please make your travel arrangements at least two weeks in advance of the clinic to secure the lowest possible fares. Accommodations: A block of rooms has been reserved at the Emory Conference Center Hotel (http://www.emoryconferencecenter.com/) exclusively for ACS participants. To make your hotel reservations, call (404) 712-6000 and request the Emory University rate for the SCDC II conference. To allow for maximum participation in the most cost effective manner, ACS requests that you plan to share a room with another team member from your institution. We look forward to your participation in what promises to be an exciting and informative workshop. Questions or comments may be addressed to your institution's Environmental Fellow or to Damon Waitt (waittd@colleges.org), Director of Environmental Programs. ******************************************************* The Electronic Palladian is sent several times a semester to all faculty and staff at ACS member institutions.
