1) TECHNOLOGY CENTER TO SELECT SUMMER 2003 WORKSHOPS

Help us select Summer 2003 ACSTC Workshops! We have posted a survey at http://www.colleges.org/techcenter/surveys/2003.html to poll preferences for the workshop offerings in Summer 2003. Possibilities include several levels of Video Production, Digital Imaging, Interactivity and Animation with Flash, Web Production, Digital Drawing, On-line Databases with MySQL and PHP, Javascript, and Digitizing and Publishing Scholarly Materials. Other suggestions for workshops are also welcome. For further information, please contact Deena Berg, dberg@colleges.org.

2) DIGITAL TECHNOLOGIES AND CULTURE PROGRAM ANNOUNCES THE "DTC COLLABORATORY"

ACS faculty and librarians have begun working with ACSTC staff on a new "DTC Collaboratory." The goal of this web portal is to provide updates on emerging technologies and to facilitate the teaching of related cultural topics via modules and collaborative courses. This static prototype will be replaced by a dynamic version with searchable databases containing information on resources and potential collaborators. DTC welcomes comments on the portal's design and content in a survey posted at http://www.colleges.org/~dtc/surveys/portal.html. The first generation of DTC course modules scheduled to debut in the spring of 2003 includes: Bioinformatics, Large Datasets and Data Mining, Cryptography, Digital Copyright, and Women's Writing on the Web. For more information, please contact Deena Berg, dberg@colleges.org.

3) STUDENT SOFTWARE ENGINEERING PROGRAM TO DEBUT IN SUMMER 2003

Plans are underway for our student software engineering program, in which students will receive instruction in SE concepts while working in teams on projects proposed by consortium faculty and staff. Current faculty come from 5 institutions, and we welcome additional faculty who would like to be involved. For more information see: http://www.colleges.org/techcenter/se/.

A team of 4 Southwestern students and recent graduates helped to pilot the program in Summer 2002, when they designed and implemented a web-based Course Delivery System, to be used for delivering team-taught consortial courses beginning this fall. For more about their project, see http://cds.colleges.org/.

We are now accepting applications for the summer 2003 program. For more information on how to apply, please contact Suzanne Buchele at Southwestern University, bucheles@southwestern.edu or Suzanne Bonefas, bonefas@colleges.org.

5) ENVIRONMENTAL INITIATIVE VOTED ON FOUR NEW GRANTS

The Curriculum and Faculty Development Alliance voted to fund four new grant proposals this summer. These projects will allow ACS faculty to develop new Environmental courses. This is terrific news, as it broadens our academic commitment to the environmental program on four different campuses. You can find more information on these grants at http://www.furman.edu/~worthen/fcd/fcdfr.htm.

6) DRAMA WEBSITE LAUNCHED

We are pleased to announce our new Drama Website at: http://www.colleges.org/~drama/. Bookmark this site and check it often for names of the program committee, a complete listing of all the ACS drama department productions scheduled for the 2002-2003 season, current projects, and long range plans.

7) ACS VISITING ARTISTS PROJECT BEGINS WITH FURMAN/RICHMOND EXCHANGE

Daniel Koppelman, Associate Professor in piano and music technology at Furman University, presented a concert at the University of Richmond on Monday, September 23. Koppelman's work features the piano in combination with two external devices: a Macintosh PowerBook computer and the Tactex MTC Express touch-pad. The program included:

8) ORPHEUS ALLIANCE ADDS 20TH CENTURY MUSIC WEBSITE

Several members of the music collaborative are creating a website to provide resources for theory and composition faculty as well as for music historians. The site will focus on "classics" of the mid and late 20th century. Sample works are Messiaen's Quartet for the End of Time, Crumb's Ancient Voices of Children, Carter's Concerto for Orchestra and Schnittke's Concerto Grosso No. 1. The site will contain analyses, sound clips, information on performances issues, and lists of recommended recordings. This site will be coordinated with the programming for the concerts at the 2003 ACS New Music Festival to be held at the ACS Technology Center July 17-22. Along with the concerts of new works by ACS faculty and students, an additional concert will be added to feature one or more of these standards of 20th century literature. The site will be linked from the Orpheus Alliance page at http://www.colleges.org/~music/, with a scheduled launch date of November 1.

9) ENVIRONMENTAL PROGRAM ANNUAL TEAM TRAINING

Eighty-two faculty, students, and staff hiked, swam, and enjoyed the foliage while attending the ACS Environmental Programs annual team training, held September 20-22 in the Great Smoky Mountains. Attendees practiced team building while making plans for their campuses and learning more about their roles as student interns, faculty fellows, and alliance directors. Teams from each campus also received assistance with the assessment questionnaire to be used to evaluate ACS campus environmental initiatives in '02-'03 by external evaluators from University Leaders for a Sustainable Future (ULSF). Attendees were also treated to entertainment provided by Centre College's green guerrilla drama troupe, who not only led a participatory percussion session with the audience using trash such as discarded soda bottles, but also wowed their viewers with short plays about "Little Green Riding Hood" and "The Real Story of the Three Little Pigs."
