CONTENTS for September 6, 2000 1. New Staff Members Join
ACS ------------------------------------------------ NEW STAFF MEMBERS JOIN ACS ACS is pleased to announce the arrival of 3 new staff members: one in international programs and two in environmental programs. Teresa Wise is our new Director of International Programs. She came to ACS from Georgia State University in Atlanta where she taught English as a Second Language, developed teacher training workshops, and was the Program Development Officer for various grants administered through the Department of Applied Linguistics and ESL. At ACS she coordinates and oversees international programs, with particular focus on Global Partners initiatives. This work includes the development of a study abroad center in Turkey, and the organization of various efforts dealing with the use of technology in language instruction. In Environmental Programs, the new Director of Environmental Programs is Dr. Damon Waitt, who came to ACS from member institution Southwestern University, where he was a member of the Biology faculty. Cindy Stokes will serve as Environmental Programs Assistant. She teaches biology at Kennesaw State University in Atlanta and will be working at ACS part-time this semester. Previously, she worked for the Georgia Environmental Protection Division as an environmental specialist. SUNOIKISIS OFFERS COLLABORATIVE LATIN COURSE THIS FALL Sunoikisis, the ACS collaborative program in Classical Studies, is offering its first inter-institutional collaborative course this fall, Advanced Latin 393: Literature of the Early Empire. Students and faculty from 6 ACS institutions will participate in the course, which involves both live sessions and asynchronous collaboration, as well as visiting lecturers from the University of Toronto, Harvard University and the University of Washington. ACS TECHNOLOGY FELLOWSHIP APPLICATIONS DUE OCTOBER 16 ACS will again make available a limited number of Technology Fellowships. These $2500 stipends are intended to provide support for faculty and staff who are developing technology-based curricular materials that can be shared with colleagues at other ACS institutions. INTERNATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES ACS faculty are encouraged to apply for the next faculty development seminar offered through the Global Partners Project. The seminar, "The Human and Physical Environment of Central Europe" will take place next summer, beginning approximately June 15, 2001. Also, look for forthcoming announcements concerning the next faculty development seminar in Turkey, which will also take place in the Summer of 2001. In addition, beginning in the Fall of 2001 students of ACS, ACM, and GLCA will have the opportunity to study in Turkey for one semester through the new Global Partners Program in Turkey. Students will study in both Istanbul and Ankara. Look on the Global Partners (http://www.41colleges.org/turkey/index.html) website for more information soon about this program. ACS ANNOUNCES NEW COLLABORATIVE PROGRAM IN MODERN LANGUAGES ACS is pleased to announce the establishment of a new collaborative program in modern languages. Dubbed "ALIANCO" (Esperanto for "alliance" and an acronym for "Allied Languages In A Networked Collaboration Online"), the goal of this program is to enhance ACS language programs through consortial collaborations. Your ideas for how to realize this goal are welcome!
