1. DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY AND CULTURE PROGRAM PLANNING MEETING

The new ACS Digital Technology and Culture Program invites your participation at our first planning workshop. The meeting will be held at the ACS Technology Center September 21-23, 2001. DTC seeks to assemble faculty from a variety of disciplines and interests to find innovative and collaborative ways of teaching and researching the changes wrought by the rapidly-developing digital world. We will be considering multi-campus classes, web-based curricular modules, resource portals, intersections with Information Fluency, hypermedia research, and emerging instructional technologies. We welcome the participation of ACS faculty and library and IT staff in all disciplines. To apply for ACS-funded travel and accommodations please print and fax the form located at http://www.colleges.org/techcenter/workshop/applications01/dtc_app.html.
More information about the program is available at http://www.colleges.org/~dtc/. Note that we need to know soon if you plan to attend, so please contact us immediately if you are interested. Please email Bryan Alexander, balexand@centenary.edu or Deena Berg, dberg@colleges.org with questions.

2. ALIANCO COLLABORATIVE MULTIMEDIA ARCHIVE PROJECT

In a follow-up session to the meeting held at the University of Richmond last April, Alianco participants met August 1-5 at the ACS Technology Center with members of the Global Partners Language and Technology Task Force and a staff member from the Center for Educational Technology at Middlebury College. The group continued planning of a centralized collaborative multimedia archive. The goal is to provide an on-line source for publishing and accessing copyright-free peer-reviewed media. The archive will be designed for scholars and students alike from a number of disciplines, but especially for language instructors at the college and secondary level.

More detailed information is available at: http://www.colleges.org/~alianco/Alianco_planning_docs/Alianco_August_2001.html. If you are interested in participating in this project -- as a contributor, technical consultant, editor, or in any other capacity, please contact Deena Berg, dberg@colleges.org, 512 863-1673.

3. COLLABORATIVE MUSIC PROGRAM PLANNING UNDERWAY

ACS music faculty had their second meeting at the ACS Technology Center in July, where they learned about using technology for music instruction and discussed plans for future collaborations. Ideas under discussion include two student/faculty travel-study opportunities for summer, 2002: one to the Santa Fe Opera and the other to visit (and play) European pipe organs. Both these trips may be preceded by a collaborative course with an on-line component, as in the ACS classics and archaeology programs. Other proposed programs of the "Orpheus Alliance" are a composition forum and a chamber music exchange. We welcome the participation and ideas of all ACS music faculty. To learn more, visit http://www.colleges.org/~music or contact Patricia Gray, gray@colleges.org.

6. IT STAFF MEETING PLANNED FOR NOVEMBER

The ACS Technology Center will host a November 2001 workshop for technical support staff. Exact dates and agenda for the workshop will be announced the first week of September. The decision to offer the November workshop was the result of discussions at an ACS technical support workshop held at the ACS Technology Center in July 2001 (http://www.colleges.org/~support/). At that workshop, IT staff members from various campuses shared methods of providing computer training and support to faculty, discussed plans for long-term collaboration among member colleges, and heard technical presentations. For more information about the upcoming workshop or to subscribe to the ACS support personnel discussion group, contact Jim Busby, busby@colleges.org, 512-863-1734.

7. CALL FOR TECHNOLOGY FELLOWSHIP PROPOSALS

ACS is pleased to announce the continuation of the Technology Fellowship Program for the Spring and Summer 2002. These fellowships provide a $2500 stipend to faculty members for developing teaching materials or other curricular enhancements in which technology plays a key role and which have potential application for other ACS institutions. Interested faculty should submit an application form along with a 2-3 page proposal detailing the project they intend to complete during the fellowship period - either the spring semester or the summer. Proposals should include information about the technical requirements of the project and institutional support, as well as explain how and when the project will be integrated into the curriculum and the mechanism for assessment. Proposals must also clearly indicate how the technology in question will enhance the applicant's teaching and student learning, citing relevant sources if available, and should include a plan for evaluation and for dissemination of the results in such a way as to share the project with colleagues at other ACS institutions. Applications for the Spring and Summer 2002 semesters are due October 12, 2001. More information and application are available at http://www.colleges.org/techcenter/fellowships.html or contact Christiane Williams, christiane@colleges.org, 404-636-9533.
