1. LADUKE to SPEAK AT 4th BIENNIAL ACS WOMENS STUDIES CONFERENCE: "GENDERED ENVIRONMENTS"

The ACS Women's Studies Steering Committee and Conference Chair Jane Archer are pleased to announce that the keynote speaker for the October conference will be Winona LaDuke, an internationally-renowned Native American Indian activist and advocate for environmental, women's and children's rights. The conference will be held October 15-17, 1999 at Birmingham-Southern College. For more information, including registration forms, please see the conference home page, http://www.colleges.org/~wms/conf99.html or contact Jane Archer, jarcher@bsc.edu.

2. ACS ENVIRONMENTAL WORKSHOP ANNOUNCEMENT: "SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT IN LOCAL COMMUNITIES"

This workshop is the next phase of ACS efforts through its Environmental Initiative to promote sustainability in local communities and continues the education and program development process initiated at last year's workshop "SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT IN LOCAL COMMUNITIES" in Atlanta. As with last year's event, the workshop will feature existing campus and intercampus ACS efforts to study sustainable development on the international and national level. This year a greater emphasis will be placed on strengthening existing programs, facilitating increased ACS faculty and student participation, and developing collaborations across programs. We will also explore the feasibility of establishing new programs in the region. If you are interested in participating in the workshop, please contact Bob Whyte, Director of Environmental Programs, rswhyte@colleges.org

3. ACS ENVIRONMENTAL WORKSHOP ANNOUNCEMENT: HERITAGE RESOURCE MANAGEMENT IN THE COLLEGE AND UNIVERSITY ENVIRONMENT

The ACS Environmental Program will hold a conference at the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee, November 11-14, 1999 on the identification and stewardship of archaeological and historical resources. All of the ACS colleges and universities have significant heritage resources that document school history and earlier human life and interaction with the environment. They also have unique opportunities to protect and preserve meaningful samples of America's heritage resources, and through these efforts to enhance such academic programs as environmental studies, archaeology, anthropology, and history. ACS administrators, faculty, and students are invited to share experiences in the historic preservation field and work together to formulate an ACS policy on heritage resource management and to establish an ACS network for student organizations and contributions in archaeology and historic preservation. For additional information visit http://www.colleges.org/~enviro/workshops/heritage.html or call Major McCollough, Sewanee Department of Anthropology, at (423) 751-2440.

4. APPLY NOW FOR SPRING OR SUMMER 2000 TECHNOLOGY FELLOWSHIPS

ACS is pleased to announce the continuation of our ACS Technology Fellowship Program for the Spring and Summer 2000 semesters. These fellowships provide a $2500 stipend for the development of teaching materials or other curricular enhancements in which technology plays a key role and which have potential application for other ACS institutions. In addition to a stipend, Fellows may also choose to spend time at the new ACS Technology Center at Southwestern University in order to avail themselves of technical and staff resources. The deadline for applications is October 15, 1999. For more information and application materials, please see http://www.colleges.org/tech/techfellows.html.

5. ACS ON-LINE TEACHING MATERIALS DATABASE

As part of our efforts both to disseminate the results of ACS technology workshops and to create a mechanism for ACS faculty to share teaching materials, ACS has been developing a database of teaching materials available on-line at member institutions. This can be searched by discipline, institution or instructor's name. Although the database is still under development, we welcome any suggestions you might have about either content or search functionality. We are also soliciting your additions to the database. If you have course materials on-line that you would like to share, please send your URL to database@colleges.org. You can visit the database at http://pieria.acs.southwestern.edu/faculty/ -- click on "On-line Course Materials".
