The Electronic Palladian News and Opportunities for ACS Faculty and Staff From the Associated Colleges of the South http://www.colleges.org *******************************************************
This is the last issue of the e-Palladian for the 2001-2002 academic year. Publication will resume in August 2002. Have a great summer! CONTENTS for June 12, 2002 1. ACS Technology Fellowships Available ---------- 1. APPLY NOW FOR SPRING OR SUMMER 2003 TECHNOLOGY FELLOWSHIPS ACS is pleased to announce the continuation of our ACS Technology Fellowship Program for the Spring and Summer 2003 semesters. These fellowships provide a stipend for the development of teaching materials or other curricular enhancements in which technology plays a key role and which have potential application for other ACS institutions. In addition to a stipend, Fellows may also choose to spend time at the ACS Technology Center at Southwestern University in order to avail themselves of technical and staff resources. The deadline for applications is October 11, 2002. For more information and application materials, please see http://www.colleges.org/techcenter/fellowships.html. ---------- ACS is pleased to announce the following opportunities in the area of information fluency: * a fourth call for proposals for collaborative projects. These proposals will be reviewed on a monthly basis between now and 15 October, or until the remaining funds are awarded. Decisions on funding for each proposal will be announced shortly after each monthly review. We are interested in hearing from ACS faculty as well as computing, library and other staff members. For more information, please visit http://www.colleges.org/~if/cfp/if_cfp0502.html. * a new information fluency "Circuit Rider" program that will fund campus visits to ACS institutions by faculty and staff members from other ACS member colleges. For more details and a list of available consultants, see http://www.colleges.org/~if/circuit_rider/index.html. * a call for proposals from campus teams for promoting discussions of information fluency issues across campus constituencies. For more information, see http://www.colleges.org/~if/cfp/campus_team_cfp.html. For more information about the ACS Information Fluency program generally, visit http://www.colleges.org/~if/ or contact Suzanne Bonefas, bonefas@colleges.org. ---------- 3. FACULTY NEEDED FOR SUMMER STUDENT SOFTWARE ENGINEERING PROGRAM AT ACSTC ACS faculty and staff have begun to plan a program that will bring students with programming experience to the ACSTC during the summer, where they would receive instruction in software engineering principles while working in teams of 2-5 on consortium projects and projects proposed by ACS faculty and staff. We are now seeking additional collaborators, who will receive a stipend for curriculum development and co-teaching in the program. If you would like to be part of this team, please contact Suzanne Bonefas, bonefas@colleges.org or Suzanne Buchele, bucheles@southwestern.edu. ---------- 4. REBECCA DAVIS AND JASON JONES JOIN THE ACSTC STAFF Two new staff members join the ACS Technology Center in June. Rebecca Davis comes to us from member institution The University of the South, where she was Visiting Assistant Prof. of Classics. As an instructional technologist with ACS, she will work with our classicists and other groups interested in inter-institutional collaboration. She will also lead our new effort to evaluate Sunoikisis, the ACS classics and archaeology program. She can be reached at rdavis@colleges.org or 512-863-1734. Jason Jones is a recent graduate of Southwestern University, where he developed the MySU web portal. At ACSTC, he will be our systems administrator and software development specialist, maintaining ACS internet services and developing our course delivery system, database and other resources. He can be reached at jonesj@colleges.org or 512-863-1622. Please join us in welcoming these new members of the ACS team. ---------- 5. COLLABORATORS SOUGHT FOR CUBAN SPRING BREAK EXPERIENCE The ACS Latin American Studies Committee seeks faculty who are interested in helping to facilitate and possibly participate in a pilot student trip to Cuba during the Spring Semester of 2003. The group intends to provide approximately 15 students with the opportunity to visit Cuba for 7-10 days during coordinated spring break periods. Faculty will need to be teaching a class with appropriate LAS content and will collaborate on selecting joint readings that will support and enhance the experience in Cuba and will be discussed across ACS campuses prior to departure. For more information, contact Teresa Wise, director of international programs, twise@colleges.org or 404.636.9533. ---------- 6. REALIA SEEKS STUDENT CONTRIBUTORS The REALIA image database project seeks students who are willing to contribute images for the teaching of Russian and Spanish. Students who are participating in study abroad programs can serve as excellent gatherers and contributors of images for the database. If you are leading a study abroad program this summer and/or you know of a student who might be interested in contributing to REALIA, please contact Teresa Wise (twise@colleges.org; 404.636.9533, ext. 19). Between the dates of June 10 and 21, contact Jeff Overholtzer (joverholtzer@wlu.edu) or Deena Berg (dberg@colleges.org; 512.863.1673). We have limited funding with which to supply participants with cameras (digital or film) and film. Also, feel free to contact us if you might be leading a study abroad program during the 2002-2003 academic year and want to learn more about this opportunity.
