CONTENTS for May 14, 2002 1. Students to Join Faculty at ACS Music Workshop 1. STUDENTS TO JOIN FACULTY AT ACS MUSIC WORKSHOP For the first time this year music students will be joining the faculty
at the July Music Technology Workshop. The New Music Concert at the end
of the workshop will feature the winning composition from the first ACS
Student Music Composition Contest (see more below). In addition, plans
are underway to include some student performers on the recital that will
feature new works by faculty members in the ACS Composers Forum. One goal
of the workshop is to begin creating partnerships that will support collaborative
performances by both faculty and students from all participating institutions. 2. ACS DIVERSITY INITIATIVE Check out the updated and expanded ACS Diversity Initiative web pages: 3. ACS ENVIRONMENTAL CURRICULUM AND FACULTY DEVELOPMENT ALLIANCE GRANTS The Curriculum and Faculty Development Alliance still has about $7K left
in this year's budget for Curriculum Development Grants. If you or someone
at your school has an idea for developing an environmental module or course
and would like to see if the grant applies, see the following web site.
Applications are due June 1. 4. POSSIBLE RESEARCH OPPORTUNITY IN BYZANTINE STUDIES A European research center focusing on Byzantine Studies has expressed
an interest in establishing a collaborative research program with a group
of individuals in the ACS. The exact nature of this collaborative work
is very much open to discussion. If you do work in Byzantine studies and
are interested in pursuing this initiative, please contact Mark B. Garrison,
mgarriso@trinity.edu, for more details. 5. WINNERS OF ACS STUDENT MUSIC COMPOSITION COMPETITION ANNOUNCED The Orpheus Alliance, the virtual music department of the ACS, sponsored its first student composition contest during the spring semester of 2002. Sixteen entries representing seven institutions were submitted. The judges were Prof. Evan Chambers from the University of Michigan, Prof. Don Freund from Indiana University and Prof. Samuel Adler from the Juilliard School of Music. We are happy to announce the winners: "Distorted Reflections and Mirror Images," 2 movements for flute, cello, and piano by J.R. Paredes at Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas "Erosion Void of Time" for soprano and piano by Andy Delikat at Birmingham-Southern College in Birmingham, Alabama "Movement for String Quartet" by Nick Drake from Centre College in Danville, Kentucky Complete information about the contest is available at http://www.colleges.org/~music/composition.html 6. ACS FACULTY MEMBER WINS PRIX DE ROME IN MUSIC One of the members of the ACS Composers Forum Mark Kilstofte from Furman
has just won the Prix de Rome, which is a very important award in music

The press release is at http://www.aarome.org/2002PR.htm. 7. BIRMINGHAM-SOUTHERN OFFERS ON-LINE MUSIC COURSE TO ACS STUDENTS At BSC, Professor Jim Cook used the Internet to open up his course in
Organ History to students at Millsaps College in Jackson, MS this spring.

Music faculty will meet at the ACS Tech Center this summer to discuss
similar kinds of collaborations that would benefit ACS music students
and programs. 8. ACS INFORMATION FLUENCY GRANTS ANNOUNCED The ACS Information Fluency Project Coordinating Committee is pleased
to announce the latest round of funded projects. The complete list of

FUNDING AVAILABLE FOR HISPANIC AMERICAN PERIODICALS INDEX The Latin American Studies Planning Group is pleased to announce the availability of funding for consortial subscriptions to the Hispanic American Periodicals Index (HAPI). HAPI covers a full range of topics related to Central and South America, Mexico, the Caribbean basin, the U.S.-Mexico border region and Hispanics within the U.S. HAPI allows for unlimited simultaneous access and offers a consortial rate if a minimum of two of our institutions subscribe. You can view more information on HAPI at their website: http://hapi.gseis.ucla.edu/. If your institution would like to subscribe to HAPI, ACS through our current Latin American Studies grant from the Woodruff Foundation, will be able to assist you with 50% of the first year subscription at the pre-July 1 rate. This would mean a cost of $450 to your institution for the first year--allowing you an excellent opportunity to review the index at an initially low cost.
