The Electronic Palladian News and Opportunities for ACS Faculty and Staff From the Associated Colleges of the South http://www.colleges.org *******************************************************
SPECIAL TECHNOLOGY PROGRAMS EDITION We would like to remind ACS faculty of numerous opportunities for technology development being offered by ACS this summer and in the coming academic year. These include workshops (travel allowance and room/board provided, and in some cases a stipend), fellowships to enable the development of technology-based materials and the opportunity to propose workshops and seminars to be held at the new ACS Technology Center at Southwestern University. For further information, please visit the ACS Technology Programs page at http://www.colleges.org/acstech.html. WORKSHOPS Please note - the application deadline for these workshops is this Friday, May 7. If you plan to get an application in but can not make this deadline, we may still be able to accommodate you, but please let us know of your intention ASAP by e-mailing Suzanne Bonefas, bonefas@colleges.org. If you have already submitted an application, you can expect to hear from us about acceptance and travel logistics by Friday May 14. To apply (or obtain further information), visit our ACS Technology Workshops page at http://www.colleges.org/acsworkshops.html for links to applications. Print and fill out the application, obtain your dean's signature and send it to the address on the application. 1. Virtual Classical Studies Dept. Meeting and Work Session Dates: June 5-8, 1999 This session is for any ACS classicist interested in using technology for teaching, sharing resources, and collaborating with colleagues at other ACS institutions. This program is a primary component of the recent grant to ACS from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. 2. NMR Workshop Date: June 26, 1999 This one-day session is for ACS faculty and staff interested in the exchange of information among ACS member institutions about innovative ways to use Nuclear Magnetic Resonance spectroscopy at all levels of the chemistry curriculum 3. Applications of Educational Technologies in the Classroom Dates: June 27-30, 1999 This workshop is intended to provide a forum for faculty and staff with some web development experience to share successful classroom applications of educational technologies, including evaluation techniques. Participants will also learn about "state-of-the-art" web-based educational technologies and receive training and support for ongoing projects. 4. WWW for Biologists Dates: July 7-11, 1999 This workshop is intended for teams comprised of biology faculty and students. Topics will include the use of the WWW for biological instruction, interactive laboratories, the establishment of a consortium-wide biological resource and the development of a technology network for ACS biologists and students. 5. Educational Technologies Bootcamp Dates: July 21-25, 1999 This workshop is intended for faculty, administrators and staff who have minimal experience in the use of computers. Topics will include basic components and configuration of personal computers; computer-based productivity tools (e.g., word processing, spreadsheet, presentation); the Internet and Web; and special topics based on participant interests. This is your opportunity to receive individualized instruction in topics or applications you would like to learn more about! 6. Multimedia Development for Teaching Dates: July 28-31, 1999 This workshop is intended for faculty and staff with some web development competence who would like to explore more advanced and interactive applications. Specific applications covered will be Macromedia Authorware and Director, the web page development application Dreamweaver and the graphics application Flash. While attention will be focused on delivering these products over the Web (via Shockwave), the knowledge gained about Authorware and Director will also apply to the creation of stand-alone interactive multimedia as well. Participants will have the opportunity to develop projects and be provided with continuing support from the ACS Technology Center. Participants will have the option of receiving a stipend OR a copy of the latest version of EITHER Authorware or Director. Faculty with Authorware or Director experience who would like to use this time for project development (and take advantage of Center facilities and staff expertise) are welcome. If you have questions about any of these workshops, please don't hesitate to contact Suzanne Bonefas or the workshop leader(s). TECHNOLOGY FELLOWSHIPS NOW AVAILABLE Proposals are now being accepted for ACS Technology Fellowships to be awarded for the 1999-2000 academic year. Two types of fellowships are available: (1) traditional fellows are awarded a $2500 stipend; (2) fellows in residence are provided an opportunity to spend all or part of the fellowship period at the ACS Technology Center to take advantage of facilities and staff expertise (in addition to a stipend). For more information about proposal requirements and an application, see http://www.colleges.org/tech/techfellows.html. Note: If you are a former or current ACS Technology Fellow who would like to work on your project at the new Center in Summer 1999, please contact Suzanne Bonefas at bonefas@colleges.org. CALL FOR WORKSHOPS AND SEMINARS AT ACS TECH. CENTER Do you have a great idea for a workshop or seminar you would like to lead at the new ACS Technology Center? Now is your chance to submit a proposal - we want to hear from you! We are interested in hearing from ACS faculty as well as computing, library and other staff members. Our goals for the Center include:
Any ideas for helping us to realize these goals are welcome! For more information about proposal requirements, please see http://www.colleges.org/tech/cfp_workshops.html. Also, don't hesitate to get in touch if you have any ideas about directions ACS should be taking with technology-related initiatives. Are there workshops you would like to see us offer? Just let us know! ******************************************************* The Electronic Palladian is sent several times a semester to all faculty and staff at ACS member institutions.
