The Electronic Palladian News and Opportunities for ACS Faculty and Staff From the Associated Colleges of the South http://www.colleges.org *******************************************************
CONTENTS for April 30, 2001 1. Request for Collaborators: Digital Technologies and Cultures 1. REQUEST FOR COLLABORATORS: DIGITAL TECHNOLOGIES AND CULTURES How do liberal arts colleges best prepare students to live and think critically in the digital age? What are the best practices for teaching genomics, digital copyright, hacktivism, Web business, interactive media, on-line identities, quantum computing? Given the mission and resources of the liberal arts environment, how do we create a pedagogy for a digital world whose components transform radically from one semester to the next? Collaboration across campuses is one solution. Drawing on ACS collaborative successes, such as the Classical Studies program, Archaeology course and the Vietnam class, faculty can use the new technology to share the teaching of it, across both institutional and disciplinary boundaries. If you are interested in working with like-minded colleagues to discuss
these questions and more, and plan for ongoing collaborations, please
visit http://www.colleges.org/~dtc/ to learn more, then contact Bryan
Alexander at Centenary College (balexand@centenary.edu) or Suzanne Bonefas
at the ACS Technology Center (bonefas@colleges.org). We will arrange a
meeting sometime in the upcoming summer or early fall -- please plan to
join us! 2. SUMMER OFFERINGS AT THE ACS TECHNOLOGY CENTER ACS is offering a number of free workshops and other gatherings at its Technology Center this summer. These are open to all ACS faculty and staff at NO CHARGE. ACS also pays travel and provides housing and food for participants. The application deadline has been extended to FRIDAY MAY 4 (applications must be IN OUR OFFICE by that date). To apply, visit the workshop home page at http://www.colleges.org/techcenter/workshop/workshop01.html and print the applications for the workshops you wish to attend, fill out and get the signature of your chief academic officer, then fax to the number printed on the application. Here are just some of the workshops you can choose from: June 19-24 NEW! "Using Digital Video for Teaching and Learning". Come learn the basics of video capture and editing and how video can enhance teaching and learning. July 18-22 "Providing Web Access to Databases." Learn basic database concepts, as well as how to make your data available on-line. No experience is required, and ACS will provide database access for those who do not have this available at the home institution. Participants will get hands-on practice, and the chance to get a basic database online by the end of the workshop. We are also holding several events that will be of interest to faculty and staff in specific disciplines and departments. As with the workshops, all travel/room/board is covered by ACS for successful applicants. Attention IT staff and anyone who provides technology support to faculty: you are all invited to attend the second annual meeting of ACS tech support staff from July 11-15, 2001. This meeting provides an opportunity for you to meet colleagues who provide support at small liberal arts colleges, share support strategies, and learn from those who are facing similar challenges. We would like to see representation from all 15 of our member institutions. Please plan to join us! For additional information, see http://www.colleges.org/~support or contact Pat Ramsey, ramseyp@southwestern.edu. ACS Music faculty and support staff: come meet your ACS colleagues July 26-30, 2001. The purpose of this meeting is two-fold: to provide an opportunity for ACS music faculty to get to know one another and discuss possible collaborative opportunities in connection with an ACS grant and to learn about the use of technology in the music curriculum. No previous technology experience is required! Please join us to discuss the possibility of webcasting campus events, artist exchanges, a teaching materials archive and other possible collaborations. ACS Classics faculty: we will hold a meeting of Sunoikisis (the ACS "virtual classics department") on June 2-10, in conjunction with planning sessions for collaborative courses in Greek Lyric Poetry and Flavian literature to be offered this fall. All ACS classicists are invited to attend and discuss issues of interest to all who teach at a small liberal arts institutions. You may come to all or part of this meeting -- see the application linked to the main workshop page for details. Again, you will find more information and applications linked to http://www.colleges.org/techcenter/workshop/workshop01.html.
The ACS Tech Center staff looks forward to seeing you here this summer! 3. PLANNING UNDERWAY FOR NEXT PHASE OF ACS TECHNOLOGY INITIATIVES Representatives of ACS and consortial groups in the midwest and northeast
(ACM, CET, GLCA) have been meeting with representatives of the Mellon
Foundation to discuss the possibility of a national Technology Centers
initiative, involving the sharing of technology programs among a larger
group of national liberal arts institutions. At ACS, we are considering
both the expansion of current programs as well as creating new ones. For
more on these plans, see http://www.colleges.org/techcenter/planning/newtechplans.pdf,
and let us know what kind of programming you would like to see at your
ACS Technology Center. 4.
