NATIONAL INSTITUTE FOR TECHNOLOGY AND LIBERAL EDUCATION (NITLE) - UPCOMING WORKSHOPS

INTRODUCTION TO SPSS FOR STATISTICAL ANALYSIS

The Introduction to SPSS for Statistical Analysis Workshop will be held on JUNE 19-20 at St. Olaf College. This two-day workshop introduces participants to SPSS, a software system for data management and analysis that can be used for most quantitative analysis. This basic introduction will enable participants to begin working with the application in their classes and will focus on the principles of good data analysis and preparation of hypotheses, as well as on the specific features of the software. Topics for the first day will include sharing techniques to teach students how to incorporate basic statistics in their classes, discussion of the assumptions behind statistical testing, and basic functions of SPSS. The second day will focus on determining the proper statistical analysis, importing or inputting data, coding data sets, and conducting actual statistical analysis within SPSS. Participants will spend the majority of the second day "trouble-shooting" and planning for future use of SPSS. Participants are encouraged to bring their own data and to share them and their intentions with the instructor prior to the workshop.

To participate in this workshop, please contact your campus liaison. A complete list of liaisons can be found at www.nitle.org/liaisons.html <http://www.nitle.org/liaisons.html>. Liaisons will send the names of these nominees to NITLE. After the nomination deadline passes, nominees will receive further information from NITLE about the registration process.

SOUTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY TO HOST PARALLEL AND CLUSTER COMPUTING WORKSHOP

Southwestern University will host a Parallel and Cluster Computing Workshop on June 20-23. Workshop participants will take part in instructional sessions on two topics: 1) Designing and Building a High-Performance Computing Resource (using such environments as Xgrid or Bootable Cluster CD) and 2) Parallel Programming Models and Protocols. Participants will begin the workshop by presenting at a poster session. The workshop will include lab time, special topics, and an outside speaker in addition to the presentations by workshop leaders. Participants will also have an opportunity to discuss collaborations in setting up parallel, cluster, and grid computing environments.

PEOPLE, PLACES AND CULTURE: MAPPING THE MENA REGION WORKSHOP TO TAKE PLACE AUGUST 14-17 AT WILLIAMS COLLEGE

Workshop participants will focus on using mapping technologies to understand one area of the world: the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). Participants will learn to use web-based mapping applications (including Google Earth and different digital atlases, for example), and we will help interested faculty convert their own spatial data sets into mapped formats using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software. We will share sources for readily-available maps and data sets, both historical and current, for the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences. Most importantly, we will discuss the role that visualization of spatial data can play in teaching and learning. Participants must be prepared to submit a 1-2 page description of the curricular idea you would like to develop, such as the type of maps you would like to incorporate into a course.

To participate in this workshop, please contact your campus liaison. A complete list of liaisons can be found at www.nitle.org/liaisons.html. Liaisons will send the names of these nominees to NITLE. After the nomination deadline passes, nominees will receive further information from NITLE about the registration process.
