1. APPLY NOW FOR SUMMER 2001 TECHNOLOGY WORKSHOPS

ACS will offer the following workshops at the Technology Center in Summer, 2001:

*June 4-8: Classics Seminar & Course planning session led by Kenny Morrell (Rhodes College)
*June 13-17: "Physlets: Teaching Physics with Interactive Curricular Material" led by Mario Belloni and Wolfgang Christian (Davidson College)
*June 28-July 3: "Web Site Production with Macromedia Tools and Javascript" led by Jim Purser (Millsaps College) and Kevin Treu (Furman University)
*July 11-15: "Providing Technical Support at a Small Liberal Arts Institution" led by Pat Ramsey (Southwestern University)
*July 18-22: "Providing Web Access to Databases" led by Tom Whaley (Washington and Lee)
*July 26-30: "Effective Use of Technology in the Music Curriculum: Part II" led by Patricia Gray (Rhodes College)

2. DEENA BERG JOINS ACS TECHNOLOGY CENTER

We're pleased to announce that Deena Berg has joined the ACS Technology Center as Instructional Technology Specialist. Deena has a Ph.D. in Classics and Archaeology from the University of Texas, and has taught at UT and Loyola Marymount in Los Angeles. Most recently, she has worked for an architectural firm in Austin. Her experience includes web page development, graphic design and marketing. She also edited and co-translated a collection of Roman comedies: Plautus and Terence: Five Comedies (Indianapolis/Cambridge, 1999).

At the ACS Tech Center, she will work with a number of faculty, staff and student groups on new and ongoing programs, e.g. the collaborative program in modern languages (Alianco), Information Fluency and planning for the new national technology centers initiative. She will also design, update and maintain various ACS internet resources. Deena can be reached at (512) 863-1673 or dberg@colleges.org.

4. SUMMER ENVIRONMENTAL PROGRAMS

The ACS Environmental Program has several exciting experiential learning opportunities for students this Summer. From the dry lowlands of Gunacaste, Costa Rica to the forests of the southern Cumberland Plateau in Tennessee, there is something here for everybody. 5. SUMMER ENVIRONMENTAL INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

There are several exciting ACS student summer internship opportunities for the summer of 2001. Host facilities include Heifer Ranch, Southface Energy Institute, The Louisville Zoo, The Oregon Museum of Science & Industry, The Cumberland Center for Conservation and Sustainable Development, and The River Basins Research Initiative. Internships typically run for 8-10 weeks during the summer and ACS provides a stipend of approximately $1500 to each student. Each facility will work with their interns to arrange housing and transportation. 6. GLOBAL PARTNERS PROGRAMS

Global Partners opportunities are knocking at your academic door and there is still time to answer!

FOR STUDENTS: Semester in Turkey, Fall 2001.

A few spots remain for this great opportunity for your students to study in Turkey. The program gives students the chance to experience both Istanbul and Ankara and to participate in a 9-day field study trip through important modern and ancient sites in western Turkey. Classes are selected at two of Turkey's finest universities (Bilkent University and Middle East Technical University/METU). In addition, students take a core course on Turkey under the leadership of the program director (Dr. David Cleeton of Oberlin College). At both Bilkent and METU all instruction is in English. Extension of Deadline: Faculty with curricular and research interests in Central Europe or Russia are urged to apply for individual travel grants to be disbursed in summer 2001 or academic year 2001-2002. The application deadline has been extended. 7. LATIN AMERICAN STUDIES CONFERENCE

Extension of Deadline: Students and faculty are encouraged to participate in the 9th Annual ACS Latin American Studies Symposium, April 6-7, 2001 at Birmingham-Southern College. Students can submit a one-page abstract for a paper involving original research. All topics pertaining to Latin America are welcome. Papers in English, Spanish or Portuguese will be considered. Faculty members are invited to accompany their students to serve as panel chairs and discussants. New Proposal Deadline: February 23, 2001.
