------------------------------- 1) ACS VIRTUAL ART GALLERY LOGO CONTEST ACS Virtual Art Gallery Logo Contest is open to all ACS students. Deadline for entries is March 1, 2004. Submission requirements are posted at http://www.colleges.org/art_gallery/logo_contest04.html. ------ ACS Reform of Introductory Science Courses for Non-science Majors program has mini-grants available for course design/redesign, assessment, and implementation. Deadline for submissions is March 15, 2004. Submission and selection requirements, plus the required cover sheet, are posted at http://www.colleges.org/sciencereform/minigrants.html. ------ Deadline for the Student Development and Engagement Alliance grant proposals
is Friday, February 27, 5pm Eastern Time. All ACS students are eligible
to apply. To view the Request for Proposal document go to http://sde.wlu.edu/documents/RFP.pdf. ------ **The SDE Alliance's 3rd annual Student Environmental Leadership Workshop
will be held April 2nd-4th at UNC Chapel Hill, NC, in conjunction with
the Southeast Student Renewable Energy Conference (SSREC). This workshop
is intended for ACS students who have not yet participated formally in
ACS environmental activities, and for those particularly interested in
energy issues. **ACS Environmental Programs announces its first ever Undergraduate Research
and Faculty Development Conference, to be hosted by Spelman College April
24-25, 2004. Guest speaker will be environmental justice guru Bob Bullard.
Faculty wishing to participate should contact Barry Allen at ballen@rollins.edu. **The CLS Alliance will host a Green Campus workshop May 13-14, 2004,
at Birmingham-Southern College, in conjunction with the Southern Environmental
Center's 5th Annual Livable Cities Conference. CLS will cover travel,
lodging, and food expenses for up to 10 ACS faculty, staff, and physical
plant managers. ------ "Flash Animations in Music Learning Objects" submitted by the Orpheus Alliance has been included in the Educause Effective Practices and Solutions site: http://www.educause.edu/ep/ep_item_detail.asp?ITEM_ID=167. Anyone interested in being on a development team for building learning objects in music should contact Patricia Gray at gray@colleges.org. ------ The following technology events will be sponsored by the ACS Technology Center in 2004. Note that first and last days listed are travel days. ACS covers basic travel and lodging expenses. The deadline for application is April 23, 2004, although early application is encouraged as acceptance is on a first-come, first-served basis. June 1-9: Teach Together via Technology (Open to all faculty, especially
teams) ------ Through its membership in NITLE (www.nitle.org) ACS can offer slots in four different GIS workshops offered this summer at other regional technology centers. ACS applicants for the first three workshops listed must apply through the ACS Tech Center by contacting Rebecca Davis (rdavis@colleges.org). 1) Campus-Community Collaborations: Integrating Partnerships, Service-Learning, Mapping, and GIS, May 27 - 30, 2004, Ohio Wesleyan University ACS can send one three-person team of faculty/community member /student/ staff. Project proposal is required as part of the application. Deadline to contact ACS to initiate application: March 1, 2004. For more information visit: http://mitc.owu.edu/ 2) Teaching with GIS in the Liberal Arts: It's Hot, It's New, Now What Do I Do? a symposium (August 5-7) and workshop (August 7-11) at Colorado College ACS can send one two-person team (faculty & technologist, intermediate GIS level) to the symposium and workshop combined (August 5-11). The workshop will provide discipline specific advisors. Apply by March 5, 2004. ACS can send 4, 2-person teams (faculty/librarian/technologist) at introductory level. 4) Teaching and learning with GIS, June 28 - July 2, 2004, Center for Educational Technology, Middlebury, (http://www.nitle.org/gis/workshopsTL.php). This workshop is for advanced GIS users and is project based. Applicants must submit a project proposal. Apply directly to Diana Sinton, NITLE GIS coordinator: dsinton@middlebury.edu. ------ The Associated Colleges of the South and the Global Partners Project and NAFSA have organized the "Turkey: Traversing Tradition and Modernity Country Culture Workshop" for international educators. Workshop topics include history, language and literature, Islam and secularism, economics, foreign policy and opportunities for education abroad. Participants will improve their ability to deliver more effective services and programs to Turkish students on their campuses and learn about developing education abroad programs in Turkey for students and faculty. The workshop is scheduled for March 11-13, 2004 in Atlanta, GA. Early registration (by February 13) is $125 for NAFSA Members and $225 for Non-NAFSA members. NAFSA also has $200 travel grants available for workshop participants. Applications for travel grants are due February 13. Regular registration (after February 13) is $175 for NAFSA Members and $275 for Non-NAFSA members. This workshop is made possible through funding from the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs at the U.S. Department of State. ------ ACS and Birmingham-Southern College are pleased to invite you to the Twelfth Annual Latin American Studies Symposium which will take place at BSC April 2-3, 2004. The symposium is an UNDERGRADUATE interdisciplinary research conference on Latin America the objective of which is to promote undergraduate research and increase dialogue among faculty members. All topics pertaining to Latin America are welcome and papers can be written in English, Spanish or Portuguese. Faculty are invited to serve as panel chairs. Activism: History, Theory, Practice, at Furman University March 26-27, 2004. Keynote speakers and presentations include Sarah Weddington, lead counsel in Roe v. Wade, the Guerrilla Girls (a group of women artists whose provocative and humorous performances expose sexism in western art and history) and Spelman College Professor Gloria Wade-Gayles and the speech ensemble Resonance who perform original poetry and music based on the oral histories of African American women from the South. Don't miss the chance to hear these fascinating speakers and to come together with faculty and students from across ACS who are interested in women's and gender studies issues.
