1. ACS HOSTS LUNCH AT AT SETC

ACS is hosting a lunch on March 4, 2004, for ACS drama/theatre faculty who are attending the SETC in Chattanooga, TN. Email bowser@colleges.org to make your lunch reservation no later than February 15, 2004. The agenda will include information about the July 15-18 workshop at Trinity and discussion about off-campus opportunities for faculty and students.

2. ACSTC INVITES APPLICATIONS FOR THE 2004 SUMMER SOFTWARE ENGINEERING INTERNSHIPS

The ACS Tech Center invites students to apply for the ACS Summer Software Engineering Internship, to be held May 30 - July 31, 2004 at the ACS Technology Center at Southwestern University. Students will receive instruction in software engineering concepts along with hands-on experience designing and coding real-world applications. They will be housed at Southwestern and will receive a $2,500 stipend. Eligible students must attend an ACS or NITLE Southern Region school and have completed 18 hours or 6 courses in Computer Science. The application deadline is January 26, 2004.

3. ACS UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH SYMPOSIUM IN CLASSICS

The University of the South will host the second annual ACS Undergraduate Research Symposium in Classics, April 2-3, 2004. ACS faculty should encourage students to submit abstracts of research papers on topics relevant to the ancient world. All ACS students are eligible to participate, but faculty endorsements are requested. Students will deliver their papers in 15-minute presentations at the conference. The abstract deadline is February 6, 2004. 4. SUMMER 2004 ACS TECHNOLOGY WORKSHOPS

The following technology events will be sponsored by the ACS Technology Center in 2004. For full descriptions and applications, visit www.colleges.org/techcenter/workshop/workshops.html. The deadline for application is April 23, 2004, although early application is encouraged as acceptance is on a first-come, first-served basis. ACS covers basic travel and lodging expenses. June 18-23: Instructional Technology (For Instructional Technologists)

June 24 -29: Building Digital Collections (Open to all faculty, librarians, staff and students; teams encouraged)

June 24 -29: REALIA Project: Digital Archive (For language and library faculty in Russian, Spanish, French, German, and Japanese)

July 8-13: 3-D Modeling (Open to all faculty and IT staff, hosted at the University of Richmond)

July 15-18: Drama: Theatrical Lighting Technology (For theatre faculty, staff, and students, hosted at Trinity University)

July 23-28: Music Technology Workshop and Third Annual New Music Festival (For music faculty, librarians, and students).

5. NITLE SUMMER SEMINAR: TECHNOLOGY AND COLLABORATION IN TEACHING ABOUT THE ARAB WORLD, ISLAMIC CULTURE, AND THE MIDDLE EAST

From July 12 - 17, 2004, The National Institute for Technology and Liberal Education (NITLE) will host the third in a series of summer seminars on inter-institutional collaboration in teaching about the Arab World, Islamic Culture, and the Middle East. 6. MARCH TECHNOLOGY WORKSHOPS AT CET (MIDDLEBURY, VERMONT)

The Center for Educational Technology in Middlebury, Vermont will be offering two workshops in March. ACS can fill a limited number of slots at these workshops. Selection will be made on the basis of early reply to this message, previous opportunities, and value of the workshop to the applicant and institution. Airfare and lodging will be provided by ACSTC and NITLE for participants from our consortium. Application deadline is February 15. 7. LATIN AMERICAN STUDIES SYMPOSIUM

ACS and Birmingham-Southern College are pleased to invite you to the Twelfth Annual Latin American Studies Symposium which will take place at BSC April 2-3, 2004. The symposium is an UNDERGRADUATE interdisciplinary research conference on Latin America the objective of which is to promote undergraduate research and increase dialogue among faculty members. All topics pertaining to Latin America are welcome and papers can be written in English, Spanish or Portuguese. Faculty are invited to serve as panel chairs. Abstracts are due by FEBRUARY 14, 2004 and can be submitted online at http://www.bsc.edu/lass/.

9. STUDY ABROAD PROGRAMS

Please encourage your students to apply for the following study abroad opportunities offered through ACS:

**Global Partners Semester in Turkey Program for students. Students study the culture and history of Turkey and participate in a 7-day field trip in Western Turkey. **Sustainable Development in Costa Rica, a 6-week summer interdisciplinary study-abroad program open to students in member institutions of the Associated Colleges of the South. Supported, managed and taught by Rollins College faculty, the program also includes faculty from Trinity University. Dates for this year's program are June 7th through July 19th, 2004. 10. ACS WOMEN'S/GENDER STUDIES CONFERENCE

ACS and Furman University invite you to the sixth Biennial ACS Women's Studies Conference, Gender Acts! Activism: History, Theory, Practice, at Furman University March 26-27, 2004. Keynote speakers and presentations include Sarah Weddington, lead counsel in Roe v. Wade, the Guerrilla Girls (a group of women artists whose provocative and humorous performances expose sexism in western art and history) and Spelman College Professor Gloria Wade-Gayles and the speech ensemble Resonance who perform original poetry and music based on the oral histories of African American women from the South. Don't miss the chance to hear these fascinating speakers and to come together with faculty and students from across ACS who are interested in women's and gender studies issues. 11. ACS ENVIRONMENTAL PROGRAMS FUNDS AVAILABLE

The Alliance for Student Development and Engagement (SDE) announces the availability of funds for grants that promote environmental career development, student leadership, student grants, and campus-community partnerships. Circuit Rider funds are also available to promote inter-institutional partnerships and information sharing. The deadline for proposals is Friday February 27th, 5pm Eastern Time.
