1.    ACS ANNOUNCES SPRING/SUMMER 2005 TECHNOLOGY FELLOWS

ACS is pleased to announce the selection of the Spring/Summer 2005 ACS Technology Fellowship recipients.  Fellows receive a $2500 stipend in return for creating technology-based teaching or research materials that can be shared with colleagues both at the home campus and across the consortium.  Thirteen fellows from six member institutions were selected: Rodney Dunning, John D. Tatter, Birmingham-Southern College;  Karin Ciholas, Phil Lockett, Centre College; Mario Belloni and Wolfgang Christian, Erland Stevens, Davidson College; Mauricio Cafiero, David Mason, Charles Stinemetz and Robert England, Rhodes College; Claudia Ferman, University of Richmond; and Marc C. OPPORTUNITIES

1.   THIRD ANNUAL ACSTC SUMMER SOFTWARE ENGINEERING INTERNSHIP

The Associated Colleges of the South Technology Program is in search of Computer Science majors or individuals with a passion for computers and software development. Through development of a real software project, interns will develop real-world skills and create a network of friends while working with a professional software developer. 2.    ACS UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH SYMPOSIUM IN CLASSICS

The Third Annual ACS Undergraduate Research Symposium in Classics will take place April 8-9, 2005 at Millsaps College in Jackson, MS. Abstracts and applications may be submitted online and are due February 4, 2005. For more information, please visit: http://www.sunoikisis.org/undergradsymposium/.


3.    MARCH TECHNOLOGY WORKSHOPS AT CET (MIDDLEBURY, VERMONT)

The Center for Educational Technology in Middlebury, Vermont will be offering four workshops in March for faculty, technologists and librarians. ACS will send a limited number of participants (covering airfare and lodging), based on early reply to this message and previous opportunities. 4.    GLOBAL PARTNERS OPPORTUNITIES

**Global Partners Semester in Turkey Program for students. Students study the culture and history of Turkey and participate in a 7-day field trip in Western Turkey. **Russia, Central Europe, and the Liberal Arts: A Global Partners Symposium and Reunion:  April 8-10, 2005, at the University of Richmond. This symposium will bring together previous seminar participants and travel grant recipients, along with others interested in the region, to to assess the state of the field, to review work supported by the project, and to identify future tasks and opportunities for the colleges and consortia in studying the region. 5.    LATIN AMERICAN STUDIES SYMPOSIUM

Mark your calendars now for the 13th Annual Latin American Studies Symposium to be held at Birmingham-Southern College April 8-9, 2005. The LAS Symposium is an undergraduate interdisciplinary research conference providing students the opportunity to present original research papers. Faculty are invited to serve as panel chairs and discussants. We invite submissions of abstracts for 15 minute presentations in English, Spanish or Portuguese.  The abstracts can be submitted online at http://www.bsc.edu/lass (click on the LAS Symposium link) and they must reach us by January 31, 2005. Please note there is a registration fee of $20.00 to help cover the meals at the conference. 6.    BRITISH STUDIES STUDENT SYMPOSIUM

The British Studies Student Symposium solicits proposals for its 2005 meeting to be held February 18-19, 2005 at Birmingham-Southern College. The symposium construes British Studies widely and invites participation by undergraduate scholars in all areas of British history, literature, and culture, including the Empire or Commonwealth and the British Isles. Interdisciplinary approaches and proposals which focus broadly on British studies are especially welcome.  Proposals may consist of individual papers or panels. Panels should consist of two, or preferably three papers related to a common theme. For each paper proposed, please submit a paragraph abstract, indicating the thesis of the paper.  Papers should have a reading time of not more than twenty minutes. Paper proposals should be submitted by January 15, 2005 to: V. Markham Lester, mlester@bsc.edu.

7.   WASHINGTON AND LEE TO HOST NONPROLIFERATION FACULTY WORKSHOP

Washington and Lee University will sponsor the "2005 Teaching Nonproliferation Summer Institute" from June 27 to July 1 in Lexington, Virginia.  Faculty members interested in introducing or enhancing courses related to weapons of mass destruction and nonproliferation are welcome to apply for this workshop.  Room and board on the W& L campus will be paid by a grant from the US Institute of Peace.  Each participant will receive $250 to help cover the costs of travel to Lexington.  Details about speakers and application procedures are available at http://wmd.wlu.edu.

8.    2006 WOMEN'S/GENDER STUDIES CONFERENCE

The 2006 ACS Women's/Gender Studies Conference will take place at Centenary College of Louisiana. Conference organizers are Michelle Wolkomir and Kim Van Hoosier-Carey. We are requesting that interested faculty work with us to decide on exact dates, theme, speakers, format, etc. If you would like to be part of the Conference Planning Committee please contact Teresa Wise, twise@colleges.org, as soon as possible.
