ACS RECEIVES TECHNOLOGY GRANT FROM THE MELLON FOUNDATION

ACS has received a grant of 1.25 million from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation for technology programs. Among the programs funded are an ACS Technology Center for faculty development in instructional technology, to be located on one of the ACS campuses. The new grant also funds a virtual Classics Department and a consortial program in archaeology. For more details, please see the next issue of the (paper) Palladian!

DEADLINE FOR 1999 SUMMER TEACHING WORKSHOP APPROACHES

The annual ACS Teaching and Learning workshop at Rollins College will take place June 8-13, 1999. This challenging and invigorating workshop is intended for faculty who want to strengthen their teaching performance. Each institution is invited to send two faculty members each year. Nominations from academic deans to the workshop steering committee should be made by the end of January. JOINT ON-LINE ARCHAEOLOGY COURSE TO BEGIN JANUARY 22

Faculty and students from 6 ACS schools will participate in an on-line course entitled "Archaeology Practicum: The Archaeology of Western Asia Minor" this spring, in preparation for their participation in the actual excavation and field school in Turkey this summer. As part of the course, students will conduct research using excavation data that will be accessible on-line. These students will also enter data electronically in the field and study various applications of information technology to archaeology. The course is part of the ACS Archaeoogy Project, directed by Mark Garrison of Trinity University. For more information, see the course home page at http://www.colleges.org/~turkey

CALL FOR PAPERS: SEVENTH ANNUAL LATIN AMERICAN STUDIES SYMPOSIUM

April 23-24, 1999, Birmingham-Southern College. The Latin American Studies Program invites proposals and individual papers from outstanding undergraduate students to share their research with an international audience from a broad representation of disciplines. To propose a panel or paper for this undergraduate research conference, please send a single-page abstract, along with a short and clearly stated titled, to Dr. Dina De Luca, conference coordinator, at ddeluca@bsc.edu. SUSTAINABLE CAMPUS DEVELOPMENT CLINIC: Winter Workshop at Davidson College

Davidson College is hosting the Sustainable Campus Development Clinic for students, staff, and faculty during the weekend of February 12-14, 1999.The clinic will address three areas of campus design: Landscaping, Transportation, and Building design. SUMMER ENVIRONMENTAL INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY FOR ACS STUDENTS

The Cumberland Center for Conservation and Sustainable Development at The University of the South is offering student research internship opportunities this summer to students of ACS institutions as part of the ACS environmental initiative. The internships include a stipend. All internships will focus on southeastern Tennessee, an area rich in biodiversity but facing increased pressure from urban growth and resource extraction, and will seek to foster student/ faculty problem solving in the areas of regional conservation and sustainable development. DEADLINE APPROACHING FOR ENVIRONMENTAL CITIZENSHIP PROPOSALS

1999 Environmental Citizenship Request For Proposals - Deadline February 1. Special Call: (1) Humanities and the Environment, and (2) Unique Environmental Problems of the Southeast.

Other potential topics may include but are not limited to: conservation of biological diversity and ecological integrity; cultural diversity and environmental justice; effects and mitigation of human action on pattern and process in biotic and abiotic systems; pollution prevention and remediation; human population and consumption; environmental and natural resource economics; environmental history, literature, and arts; environmental policy and law; ethics, values, belief systems and considerations of the global community and sustainable livelihoods.
