NEWS

ENVIRONMENTAL GRANTS AWARDED

Congratulations to the professors and student below, who were recently awarded grants from ACS Environmental Programs Alliances. To date, four grants have been awarded; proposals from students, faculty and staff continue to be sought by each of the three alliances.

1. Student Jessica Jarrett of Rollins received a teaching assistantship to assist Dr. Bruce Stephenson in a course entitled Environmental Studies 289, Nature in the City.

2. Dr. Martin Knoll of Sewanee received a curriculum development grant to plan a course in Germany entitled “International Comparative Watershed Studies.”

3. Drs. John Knox and Jim Warren, at Washington & Lee, received a curriculum development grant to develop a new interdisciplinary course entitled “Island Biogeography and Species Conservation: Science and Literature.”

4. Assistant professor Barbara MacAlpine and associate professor Bea Caraway, of Trinity, received a grant to create a service learning component in their first year seminar entitled “Making a Difference for a Livable Planet.”

OPPORTUNITIES FROM ACS

1. INTERDISCIPLINARY MINI-GRANTS AVAILABLE

2. UNDERGRADUATE COLLABORATIVE SCHOLARSHIPS/RESEARCH GRANTS AVAILABLE

All departments and divisions at ACS member institutions are invited to apply for grants that may be used for planning purposes or for the design, redesign, implementation, or assessment of collaborative scholarship/research opportunities. 3. DIVERSITY MINI-GRANTS FOR STUDENT LED COLLABORATION WITH FACULTY/STAFF AVAILABLE

ACS students in collaboration with faculty/staff are invited to submit proposals that address diversity issues/concerns that affect and challenge campus climates. Deadlines for submission are February 3, 2006, April 7, 2006, and October 6, 2006. 4. WORKSHOP MINI-GRANTS FOR CAMPUS DIVERSITY LEADERSHIPS MODELS AVAILABLE

These small mini-grants are available to help offset expenses associated with hosting a campus workshop to develop on-going campus models that promote staff, faculty, and student Diversity Leadership. 5. SEMESTER IN TURKEY FALL 2006

Global Partners is pleased to announce that Dr. Dan Shaw of Colorado College will be the director of the Fall 2006 Semester in Turkey Program. Dr. Shaw has traveled extensively in the Middle East, including Syria, Lebanon and Jordan. He teaches courses in Islamic Studies and in Christianity, specializing in issues of cultural interchange between Islamic and Christian societies.

The Semester in Turkey Program offers students a unique opportunity to study in both Istanbul and Ankara and includes a week long field trip in western Turkey. The program is open to students in all disciplines, including the natural sciences. 6. WOMEN'S/GENDER STUDIES CONFERENCE 2006

Plan now to attend the ACS 2006 Women's/Gender Studies Conference at Centenary College. We have an exciting line-up of keynote speakers, international guests and musical performances: The keynote speaker is Elizabeth Birch of the Human Rights Campaign. The Magnolia Sisters are the featured performers and will present many styles of the French music characteristic of the heritage of Louisiana. 7. LATIN AMERICAN STUDIES SYMPOSIUM

The 14th Annual Latin American Studies Symposium will be held at Birmingham-Southern College April 7-8, 2006. This interdisciplinary event is a unique opportunity for undergraduate student to present their research in a professional setting. Last year's roundtable with graduate students in Latin American Studies and Spanish programs will be repeated this year. 8. HUMANITY IN ACTION PROGRAM SEEKING APPLICANTS

Humanity in Action (HIA) is a New York-based not-for-profit organization that seeks to engage, inspire, and empower future human rights leaders by giving them the opportunity to meet current human rights leaders in the context of transnational educational programs. Humanity in Action sponsors six summer programs on minority issues in Europe and the United States. This year they are seeking a total of 70 students from U.S. colleges and universities to participate in the 2006 programs. They are looking for applicants from all majors with a demonstrated record of achievement and commitment to human rights and minority issues. The 2006 summer programs will take place in Amsterdam, Berlin, Copenhagen, New York, Paris, and Warsaw.

Upon completion of the summer program, HIA seeks to further the personal and professional growth of participants by offering a network of Senior Fellows (graduates of the program) in the U.S. and Europe, periodic lectures and conferences, and eligibility for a variety of prestigious internships (currently including the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, the U.S. House of Representatives, the European Parliament, and others). 9. ENVIRONMENTAL GRANTS AVAILABLE

Proposals are sought from faculty, students, and staff for environmental grants in the following categories: curriculum development, campus-community partnerships, student teaching assistantships, and student internships. 2. STUDENT MUSIC COMPOSITION CONTEST ACCEPTING ENTRIES

The Student Music Composition contest begun in 2002 by the ACS Orpheus Alliance will continue this year and will be open to students in all NITLE member institutions. Entrants must be enrolled in theory and/or composition classes. Works may be for written for the instruments in Luna Nova ensemble (flute, clarinet, violin, cello, piano, percussion) or for a cappella SATB choir.

Winning students will be guests of NITLE at the 2006 Music Technology Workshop and New Music Festival to be held at Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida June 23-28. Their works will be performed and professionally recorded.

3. SUNOIKISIS INVITES SUBMISSIONS FOR UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH SYMPOSIUM IN CLASSICS

The Fourth Annual Sunoikisis Undergraduate Research Symposium in Classics will take place March 24-25, 2006 at Millsaps College in Jackson, MS. Sunoikisis invites students of the Classical World to submit abstracts on any topic relevant to Ancient Greece and Rome, as well as the Classical Tradition. 4. NITLE INVITES APPLICATIONS FOR SUMMER SOFTWARE ENGINEERING INTERNSHIP

The National Institute for Technology and Liberal Education (NITLE, http://www.nitle.org) is in search of Computer Science majors or individuals with a passion for computers and software development. Through development of a software project to be used by NITLE, interns will develop real-world skills and create a network of friends while working on a professional software development project. The internship will take place from June 4 to August 5, 2006 on the Southwestern University Campus in Georgetown, TX. Applications are due February 10. 5. “MANAGING AND SUPPORTING GIS” WORKSHOP

A "Managing and Supporting GIS" Workshop will be held March 12-15 at Trinity University in San Antonio, TX. Designed for Instructional Technologists, Librarians, and GIS Specialists, this workshop will address the many challenging topics that liberal arts professionals face when charged with managing the rising interest in GIS mapping technologies on their campuses.
