ACS Receives Grant from Mellon Foundation for Information Fluency ================================================================ ACS RECEIVES GRANT FROM MELLON FOR INFORMATION FLUENCY ACS is pleased to announce that we have received a grant of $600,000 for consortial Information Fluency initiatives. Librarians, IT staff and faculty met at the ACS Technology Center in November to discuss these initiatives, and form task forces to examine Standards, Assessment, Curriculum and Faculty/Staff Training and Collaboration. GLOBAL PARTNERS: SUMMER 2000 OPPORTUNITIES FOR FACULTY The tri-consortial Global Partners program is making available several opportunities for faculty development in Summer 2000 and beyond. These programs will be in Africa, Turkey, Central Europe (2001) and Russia (2002). In Summer 2000, the program will host a seminar in Nairobi, Kenya from June 26 - July 9 and a seminar in Ankara, Turkey from June 11-22. All seminar-related expenses will be covered for successful applicants. Deadline for application is Jan. 15 for Turkey, Feb. 18 for Nairobi. SUMMER 2000 TECHNOLOGY WORKSHOPS FOR ACS FACULTY AND STAFF The following workshops will be offered at the ACS Technology Center in Summer 2000. Travel and room/board will be covered for successful applicants. ARKANSAS GOVERNOR'S SCHOOL SEEKS FACULTY FOR SUMMER 2000 The Arkansas Governor's School, a unique comprehensive six week summer institute for gifted high school seniors, invites applications for faculty in all disciplines: social sciences, arts, humanities and sciences. Employment period is from June 5 to July 22. Deadline for applications is January 7. SUMMER 2000 ENVIRONMENTAL INTERNSHIP PROGRAM The ACS Environmental Program will again sponsor several student internships in the summer of 2000. Complete details regarding specific sites and application process will be announced in early January 2000. Students examine tropical rainforest destruction and preservation as well as the potential effects of eco-tourism in a variety of ecosystems. We are very interested in additional ACS faculty particpation. We are particularly interested in additional faculty participation. For more information, contact Dr. Bernal at (407) 646-2567 or by e-mail: Pedro.Bernal@rollins.edu. 4) Living in the Yucatan is a field course and research program which exposes students to the impact of tourism and development on Yucatan coastal ecosystems and coral reefs; archaeology-ecology of the Classic Maya civilization; and study of a tropical deciduous forest and cultural use of the local natural resources.
