NEWS
1. INSTITUTIONS SIGN PRESIDENTS CLIMATE COMMITMENT
The American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment is a nationwide movement to "address global warming by garnering institutional commitments to neutralize greenhouse gas emissions, and to accelerate the research and educational efforts of higher education to equip society to re-stabilize the earth's climate." This movement is coordinated and supported by three environmental non-profits: Second Nature, ecoAmerica and the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE). Nine ACS institutions have signed the commitment at this time (Birmingham-Southern College, Centre College, Davidson College, Furman University, Rhodes College, Sewanee: University of the South, Trinity University, University of Richmond, and Washington and Lee University). OPPORTUNITIES
1. GRANTS FOR MELLON FACULTY AND INSTITUTIONAL RENEWAL
ACS is offering new grants in faculty and institutional renewal, supported by a grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. In the first round of grants, pre-proposals are due on January 15, 2008. For those pre-proposals that are approved, final proposals will be due on March 10, 2008. We encourage you to read the various materials and consider preparing a proposal for consideration. We are accepting proposals for individual and collaborative projects at one institution or across several ACS institutions. 2. ACS SUMMER TEACHING AND LEARNING WORKSHOP
The ACS Summer Teaching and Learning Workshop is scheduled for June 3-8, 2008 at Rollins College in Winter Park, FL. The workshop is designed for good teachers who want to hone their craft and build a culture of excellent teaching on their respective campuses. If you are interested in attending this year's workshops, please contact your academic dean or provost who then nominate you for participation. 3. ROLLING DEADLINE FOR ENVIRONMENTAL GRANTS
The three alliances of the ACS Environmental Initiative seek proposals for grants from $500-$2000. Curriculum and Faculty Development Alliance, the Student Development and Engagement Alliance, and the Campus-Community Partnerships Alliance continue to support environmental projects including new and revamped courses, service learning and other community partnerships, environmental justice research and activities, student teaching assistants, and internal or external internships. We are especially interested in funding new work that has not received grants in the past. RFPs are online at www.colleges.org/enviro. 4. COSTA RICA: THE SEARCH FOR SUSTAINABILITY
Rollins College will host its third annual faculty seminar on June 13-23, 2008 in Costa Rica for Global Partners Project institutions. The focus will be on Sustainable development – an interdisciplinary approach. Rollins is accepting applications on a space available, first-come-first-served basis. The College is generously subsidizing almost half of the expenses of the seminar to significantly reduce costs for participants. 5. ROLLING PROPOSAL DEADLINES FOR GRANTS IN DIVERSITY
Two types of Diversity Mini-Grants are available:
a ) Student Led Collaboration with Faculty & Staff for Diversity Mini-Grants
The Diversity Planning Committee invites students, in collaboration with faculty/staff, at all ACS institutions to submit proposals for Diversity Mini-Grant Awards. Proposals may be submitted for any type of diversity issues/concerns that directly affect and challenge campus climate. Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis until February 8, 2008 for grants up to $2,500 each. Projects must be completed and final reports submitted by May 15, 2008. b) Workshop Mini-Grants for Campus Diversity Leadership Models
The Diversity Planning Committee is offering grants of up to $2,000 each. These mini-grants are offered to offset expenses associated with hosting a campus workshop to develop and promote staff, faculty, and student Diversity Leadership. Diversity Leadership models include, but are not limited to, those provided by National Coalition Building Institute [NCBI], the Anti-Defamation League, Training for Social Change, and the National Conference for Community and Justice. Other models also may be used. Please note that these grants are different from the Diversity Mini-Grants for Student Led Collaboration with Faculty and Staff. Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis until February 8, 2008 for grants up to $2,000 each. 6. 2008 ACS FALL SEMESTER IN TURKEY PROGRAM
Applications from students for the 2008 ACS Fall Semester in Turkey Program are now being accepted. The deadline for application is February 15, 2008. 7. 16TH ANNUAL LATIN AMERICAN STUDIES SYMPOSIUM
Birmingham-Southern College Latin American Studies Program invite proposal from students to the 16th Annual LAS Symposium on March 14-15, 2008. This interdisciplinary conference aims to promote undergraduate research focused on Latin America. The deadline for submitting panel/paper proposals to the address listed below or online is November 30, 2007. 8. BRITISH STUDIES CONFERENCE
The sixth annual British Studies Student Symposium is schedule for February 15-16, 2008 at Birmingham-Southern College. This conference invites participation by undergraduate scholars in all areas of British history, literature, and culture, including the Empire or Commonwealth and the British Isles. 9. ANNUAL MEETING OF SENIOR STUDENT LIFE OFFICERS
