FIRST ACS CHINESE STUDIES CONFERENCE
Fifty three faculty representing all sixteen ACS institutions participated in the ACS First Chinese Studies Conference hosted by Washington and Lee University, October 17-18, 2008. The intense two-day conference revolved around exchanges of views and discussions on integrating Chinese Studies into the curriculum and on promoting the use of new and emerging technology inside and outside of classroom in the teaching of Chinese language and culture. There were two parallel sessions for the language faculty and the non-language faculty, during which they identified steps for the future and shared their views and insights. As an immediate follow-up to the conference in the area of technology, a few pilot projects focusing on starting a language maintenance course (for students returning from overseas), establishing a Facebook group, and developing collaborative resources are under preparation and scheduled to be launched in Spring, 2009. The success of the conference proves that there is a great deal of interest from faculty in China.
