OPPORTUNITIES

1. $25,000 IN ENVIRONMENTAL GRANTS AVAILABLE

Do you know anyone who needs a grant to create or modify a course, do research, complete a project in the community, or hire a student teaching or research assistant? Do you have an intern position in your department and need some funding to help pay that student a stipend? ACS can help! We have a total of about $25,000 to give away this year. Grants are awarded on a first-come-first-served basis, so don't delay. You can find our proposal requests online at www.colleges.org/enviro. The alliance directors will be happy to look at pre-proposals and let you know if you need further clarifications, etc. We also have examples of what a successful proposal looks like at http://www.colleges.org/enviro/proposals/index.html; last year's proposals are at http://www.colleges.org/enviro/proposals/past_proposals.html.

2. ROLLING PROPOSAL DEADLINES FOR GRANTS IN DIVERSITY

Two types of Diversity Mini-Grants are available:

1. Student Led Collaboration with Faculty & Staff for Diversity Mini-Grants
The Diversity Planning Committee invites students, in collaboration with faculty/staff, at all ACS institutions to submit proposals for Diversity Mini-Grant Awards. Proposals may be submitted for any type of diversity issues/concerns that directly affect and challenge campus climate. Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis from now until September 30, 2007 for grants up to $2,500 each. Projects must be completed and final reports submitted by November 15, 2007. 2. Workshop Mini-Grants for Campus Diversity Leadership Models
The Diversity Planning Committee is offering grants of up to $2,000 each. These mini-grants are offered to offset expenses associated with hosting a campus workshop to develop and promote staff, faculty, and student Diversity Leadership/./ Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis from now until October 10, 2007. Projects must be completed and final reports submitted by November 15, 2007. 3. SCIENCE EDUCATION MEETING

A science education meeting will be held at Furman University on Friday, April 27 & Saturday, April 28. It is a follow-up meeting of the newly formed committee to develop a plan and a grant proposal for the next science reform initiative around the reform of K-16 science education. The group consists of Science and Education faculty. For further information, please contact Marcia White at mwhite@colleges.org.

4. DIVERSITY MEETING

There will be a Diversity gathering on Friday, June 8 & Saturday, June 9 at Sewanee: University of the South. It will center on sharing results of the projects created through diversity mini-grants and include the other diversity activities that are a part of the Woodruff Foundation funded New Models initiative. The group will also look at next steps beyond the New Models initiative. Participants will include recipients of the mini-grants, members of the planning committee and workshop facilitators. For information, contact Marcia White at mwhite@colleges.org.

5. MATHEMATICS - TRINITY UNIVERSITY TO HOST PROFESSIONAL ENHANCEMENT PROGRAMS WORKSHOP

With funding from the Mathematical Association of America, Trinity University will host a PREP (Professional Enhancement Programs) Workshop titled “The Art of Factorization in Multiplicative Structures” May 21-25. Questions about non-unique factorizations of elements in integral domains and monoids have become the focus of much recent mathematical literature. Such questions have a rich mathematical basis; their solutions involve techniques not only from commutative algebra but also from classical number theory, combinatorics, graph theory, abelian group theory, discrete geometry, and additive number theory. This exciting five-day workshop will present fundamental mathematical concepts and results at a basic level. Participants will receive a preliminary copy of a textbook dedicated to this topic suitable for advanced undergraduates or beginning graduate students.
Registration for the workshop is handled by the MAA http://www.maa.org/prep/2007/. The registration is $400. The registration fee covers campus housing and all meals except for Wednesday evening May 23rd. More information on the Workshop can be found at http://www.trinity.edu/schapman/ArtofFactorization.htm .
