1. GRANTS FOR MELLON FACULTY AND INSTITUTIONAL RENEWAL
ACS is offering grants in faculty and institutional renewal, supported by a grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. In the most recent round of grants awarded in January 2009, 22 ACS faculty received grants. These faculty were from Birmingham Southern College, Centre College, Centenary College, Davidson College, Furman University, Millsaps College, University of Richmond, Rollins College, Southwestern University and Washington and Lee University. In the next round of grants, pre-proposals are due on October 1, 2009. For those pre-proposals that are approved, final proposals will be due on January 15, 2010. We encourage you to read the various materials and consider preparing a proposal for consideration. We are accepting proposals for individual and collaborative projects at one institution or across several ACS institutions. Visit the website at http://www.colleges.org/faculty_renewal/index.html to view the guidelines and selection criteria and to download the required cover page. If you have further questions about the program or process, please contact Marcia White at
mwhite@colleges.org.
2., ENVIRONMENTAL WORKSHOP IN FALL OF 2009
ACS will help organize a workshop in the Fall of 2009, for key sustainability players on each campus to share information about activities such as the progress towards Presidents Climate Commitment action plans (ten campuses are now signatories), LEED buildings, environmental studies upgrades, research, extra-curricular activities, green events, and the like. For those institutions that have already hired sustainability professionals, we will invite them to speak with the group about their work. Costs for the workshop (travel, food, and accommodation) will be born by individual attendees, via support from their campuses. For more information, please contact Elizabeth MacNabb,
emacnabb@centre.edu.
3. INQUIRY-BASED LEARNING WORKSHOP
Through a grant from the Educational Advancement Foundation, ACS will hold a workshop this summer for mathematics faculty interested in implementing Inquiry-Based Learning in their teaching. The ACS IBL workshop will be held July 13-18, 2009 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Austin, TX, and all expenses are paid. See the workshop flyer and application form for more details. Deadline for applications is March 31, 2009. For more information, e-mail workshop director Stan Yoshinobu at
stanyoshinobu@mac.com.
Inquiry-based learning (IBL) is a method of teaching that guides students toward independent discovery through active engagement in problem solving. In mathematics, IBL instruction centers on students working problems or proving theorems on their own and presenting their results to their peers. This method was exemplified by the teaching of R.L. Moore and H.S. Wall, who were remarkably successful in recognizing and nurturing the mathematical talent of their students at the University of Texas at Austin. During this summer's IBL workshop, participants will also attend the 12th Annual Legacy of R.L. Moore Conference.
4. CONFERENCE ON AFRICA ON CAMPUS
The Africa Network is a growing national consortium of liberal arts colleges committed to literacy about and concern for Africa in American higher education. The Africa Network's Annual Conference on "Africa on Campus: Enhancing the Place of Africa Inside and Outside the Classroom" will be held on April 17th-19th, 2009, at the Hickory Ridge Marriott Conference Center in Lisle, Illinois (suburban Chicago). Full details about the conference, the program schedule, accommodations, travel information, and online registration are available on the Africa Network's website, www.africanetwork.org. The deadline for conference registration is April 6th, 2009. ACS faculty are encouraged to attend. E-mail inquiries and telephone calls concerning the conference should be directed to Dr. Tom Benson, Chair of the Africa Network Board, at
bensontom789@gmail.com or (212)-213-3970.
5. LATIN AMERICAN STUDIES SYMPOSIUM
The 17th annual Latin American Symposium, hosted by Birmingham-Southern College, will be held on April 17-18, 2009. The interdisciplinary conference aims to promote undergraduate research focussed on Latin America. All topics pertaining to Latin America are welcome. The presentations should be 15 minutes in length. All participants need to register for the conference; the registration fee is $20. Panel/paper proposals should be sent to: Dr. Barbara Domcekova, Director, Latin American Studies Symposium, Birmingham-Southern College, 900 Arkadelphia Road, Birmingham, AL 35254, Phone: (205) 226-4975, Fax: (205) 226-3089.
