1. FURMAN UNIVERSITY RECEIVES GRANTS FOR GREEN BUILDING
Congratulations to Furman University, which is the first ACS institution to be awarded both an Andrew W. Mellon Foundation grant and a Kresge Foundation grant towards construction of an environmentally sustainable building. Furman received a $1 million challenge grant from Kresge late last summer, and $200,000 from Mellon in January of this year. Both grants were awarded to help make the Charles H. Townes Center for Science, which will be LEED certified, more environmentally correct. For more information, see http://www.furman.edu/press/pressarchive.cfm?ID=3865 and http://www.furman.edu/press/pressarchive.cfm?ID=3938.
2. ACS PRESIDENTS SIGN PRESIDENTS CLIMATE COMMITMENT
The American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment is a nationwide movement to "address global warming by garnering institutional commitments to neutralize greenhouse gas emissions, and to accelerate the research and educational efforts of higher education to equip society to re-stabilize the earth's climate." This movement is coordinated and supported by three environmental non-profits: Second Nature, ecoAmerica and the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE). In ACS, the presidents of Birmingham-Southern College, Centre College, Furman University and Washington and Lee University have signed the commitment. For more information about the commitment, please go to http://www.presidentsclimatecommitment.org/html/about.php.

Administered as four separate funds by the regional advisory councils of NITLE, the IIF program will run through June 2008.
