ACS ENVIRONMENTAL POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIPS
Twelve ACS institutions were selected in December to receive post-doctoral fellows for the 2009-2011 academic years, with funds supplied by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. For the most part, institutions are already hard at work recruiting candidates, who will begin teaching in fall 2009. A committee of academic deans made the selections after carefully reviewing 22 institutional proposals. Criteria included the potential impact the fellow would have on the institution’s environmental studies program, the extent to which the fellow would be involved in interdisciplinary programs, teaching and research opportunities and responsibilities, and the mentoring to be provided for the fellow. The institutions which will receive fellows are: Centenary College of Louisiana, Centre College, Davidson College, Furman University, Hendrix College, Millsaps College, Rollins College, Sewanee: The University of the South, Southwestern University, Spelman College, Trinity University and Washington and Lee University. Under the grant, 12 additional fellows will be made available by the consortium for the years 2011-2013. For information on the next round of fellows, or any other aspect of the initiative, please contact Elizabeth MacNabb at
emacnabb@colleges.org.

The theme is “The Personal is Still Political: Gendered Identities in the Twenty-First Century,” and the keynote speaker will be Dr. Angela Davis, professor of the History of Consciousness at the University of California at Santa Cruz. Please help us make this an extraordinary event by advertising it on your campuses, sharing this conference registration with your undergraduates and colleagues, and encouraging them to participate.
For more information, please visit ACS’s conference site: www.colleges.org/wms/conference/index.html. Rhodes also has its own website devoted to the conference: www.rhodes.edu/genderconference. Please don’t hesitate to contact Leslie Petty (
pettyl@rhodes.edu) with questions or comments. We hope to see many of you in Memphis in March for what promises to be an exciting conference!

Information on the conference maybe obtained from Michael Leslie at
leslie@rhodes.edu.
4. INQUIRY-BASED LEARNING WORKSHOP
Through a grant from the Educational Advancement Foundation, ACS will hold a one-week workshop this summer for mathematics faculty interested in implementing Inquiry-Based Learning in their teaching. The ACS IBL workshop will be held July 13-18, 2009 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Austin, TX. See the workshop flyer and application form for more details. Deadline for applications is March 31, 2009. For more information, e-mail workshop director Stan Yoshinobu at
stanyoshinobu@mac.com.
Inquiry-based learning (IBL) is a method of teaching that guides students toward independent discovery through active engagement in problem solving. In mathematics, IBL instruction centers on students working problems or proving theorems on their own and presenting their results to their peers. This method was exemplified by the teaching of R.L. Moore and H.S. Wall, who were remarkably successful in recognizing and nurturing the mathematical talent of their students at the University of Texas at Austin. During this summer's IBL workshop, participants will also attend the 12th Annual Legacy of R.L. Moore Conference.
5. LATIN AMERICAN STUDIES SYMPOSIUM
The 17th annual Latin American Symposium, hosted by Birmingham-Southern College, will be held on April 17-18, 2009. The interdisciplinary conference aims to promote undergraduate research focussed on Latin America. All topics pertaining to Latin America are welcome. The presentations should be 15 minutes in length. All participants need to register for the conference; the registration fee is $20. Panel/paper proposals should be sent to: Dr. Barbara Domcekova, Director, Latin American Studies Symposium, Birmingham-Southern College, 900 Arkadelphia Road, Birmingham, AL 35254, Phone: (205) 226-4975, Fax: (205) 226-3089.
