Focus on Students
| Through ACS, students are
offered a rich variety of international programs. The development
of an electronic virtual library for ACS institutions is also enhancing
student learning in a substantial way. Through this new arrangement,
funded with a $1,200,000 grant from Andrew W. Mellon Foundation,
students and others have gained access to a considerably enlarged
set of indexes and periodicals.

The substantial environmental grant also promises
to have a notable impact on students in expanding courses, stimulating
cooperative student-faculty research, extending opportunities for
service, providing internships and preparing students to be effective
environmental citizens.
Minority students, in particular,
have benefited from the Minority Opportunity through School Transformation
or "MOST" program sponsored by the American Sociological Association,
with funding from the Ford Foundation. Through this program, students
have been afforded an opportunity to attend rigorous summer workshops
offered at major universities. These experiences have given students
a taste of what they will experience in graduate and professional
school, thereby preparing them for further academic studies. The
consortium is currently examining this program as a prototype
for programs to be offered to students majoring in other disciplines. |
| An extensive exchange of
information has occurred among career planning
officers of the member institutions, thereby enabling them to
prepare students for their lives after graduation. Meanwhile, student
affairs directors have exchanged lessons about assisting students
during their sophomore year and have shared information on what
works best in leadership training for students. Further programs
are on the drawing board, including conferences for the presentation
of student research.
