Clinic Summary: On November
10-12, 2000, the Associated Colleges of the South and Emory University
co-sponsored the Second Annual Sustainable Campus Development Clinic
(SCDCII) at the Emory Conference Center in Atlanta, Georgia. Modeled
after the 1999 Sustainable Campus Development Clinic held at Davidson
College, SCDCII addressed a number of campus sustainability issues
including green building design, landscaping practices, recycling,
and energy conservation.
The program started on Friday, November 10th with a technical
session, Greening Campus Operations, hosted by Southface Energy
Institute. The technical session included a tour of the Southface
facility in Atlanta, Georgia, and was attended by 21 facilities
management staff who learned about the US Green Building Council's
LEED rating system, Energy Star, Environmental Auditing, Life Cycle
Cost Analysis, and other cost saving measures. That evening, teams
gathered at the Rollins School of Public Health to view posters
and share stories over food and drink provided by the Facilities
Management Division of Emory University.
On Saturday, November 11th, campus teams started the day with
welcoming remarks from Dr. Wayne Anderson, President of ACS, and
Chip Bullock, Director of Campus Planning at Emory University. Their
welcoming comments were followed by a keynote address on Building
Design delivered by Dennis Creech, President of Southface Energy
Institute and a panel discussion on Cross-Campus Team Building.
Lunch featured round table discussions on a variety of sustainability
topics and a chance to interact with team members from other institutions.
Lunch was followed by a second panel, Developing Recycling/Waste
Initiatives, hosted by Furman, Millsaps, and Rhodes. That afternoon,
participants devoted time to team project planning and development
followed by practical application tours to the Emory recycling facility,
a LEEDŐs construction site, and the conference center. The day culminated
with dinner and an inspiring keynote address, Sustainable Development:
Implementation in Higher Education, by George Bandy, Sustainable
Programs Manager, Interface Research Corporation, Kennesaw, GA.
On Sunday, November 12th, the third and final keynote address,
Designing Campus Landscapes for Sustainability and a Sense of Place,
was given by Darrel Morrison, Professor of Landscape Architecture
at the University of Georgia. Following the address, teams finished
developing their projects and presented them to the group for comments
and discussion. The clinic concluded at noon on Sunday with a closing
ceremony in which each participant shared a memorable experience
from the clinic.
