SUSTAINABLE CAMPUS DEVELOPMENT CLINIC

Announcing Winter Workshop at Davidson College
February 12-14, 1999

Davidson College is hosting the Sustainable Campus Development Clinic for students, staff, and faculty during the weekend of February 12-14, 1999. The Clinic is sponsored by Associated Colleges of the South and National Wildlife Federation's Campus Ecology Program.

Why Attend?
Colleges and universities represent an influential segment of the nation's population and economy. Roughly 3,000 schools spend $150 billion and invest $75 billion annually. They are microcosms of the larger society in that campuses import food, water, energy, and material goods; they create solid, organic, and toxic wastes; and their policies affect local and national economies. With the constant expansion of these institutions through building programs, fund-raising campaigns, and higher enrollments, it becomes ever more apparent that these entities must act with environmental responsibility. Universities have the resources to act as prototypes and the respect to act as role models. The university's impact upon their community, students, and local economy is tremendous. The importance of using sustainable campus development to create "Green" campuses can be seen in benefits to the surrounding environment and community, the cultivation of environmental stewardship among its students, and its drastically reduced operating costs.

The Purpose:
The Sustainable Campus Development Clinic will address three areas of campus design:

Landscaping - the design and implementation of appropriate landscape plans that enhance the campus' appearance and help meet the college's ecological and financial goals.
Transportation - the planning and execution of a transportation strategy for the campus including public transit, biking and walking trails, carpooling, and preservation of green space
Building design - the ecologically appropriate design, construction, and maintenance of energy efficient and sustainable dormitories, student unions, and academic and administrative buildings

The Sustainable Campus Development Clinic will provide a more in depth understanding of these issues, by addressing the various problems and solutions to ecological design, as well as suggesting strategies for the implementation of these solutions. This clinic will also help to create a more cohesive master plan to the building, landscaping, and transport on the participating ACS campuses.

Who Should Attend?
One important aspect of the clinic will be its "team" approach. Participating institutions are encouraged to send a team of two students, two faculty, two physical plant staff members, and one administrator (perhaps from planning or business/finance). The goal is to have the representatives from each institution return to their campuses and be able to put their ideas to practice at all levels of college life and operations.
