Environmental Studies Curriculum Workshop

June 22-24, 1998

The workshop focuses on alternative ways of educating undergraduates in liberal arts colleges about the physical environment in which they will live in the 21st century. Representatives from undergraduate and graduate schools, business, government, and NGO's will discuss needs for environmental education of undergraduates and different curriculums that address those needs. The workshop will help ACS institutions develop environmental education curricula that are best suited for their students and the overall campus community.

Details

Panel 1: Purposes of Environmental Education for Undergraduates. Representatives from established environmental studies programs, business, government, and NGO's will present the importance of environmental studies in providing a liberal arts education, promotion of favorable physical environments and preparation for careers in the environment. (ca. 10 min per speaker)

Small Group Discussions on Purposes. Small groups comprised of individuals from different ACS institutions will have roundtable discussions about the information and issues addressed by panel 1. Panel 2: Content of Environmental Education. Representatives from established environmental studies programs, business, government, and NGO's will present subject matter, e.g., natural science, policy and humanities, including methods and skills to be studied in environmental education programs. (ca. 10 min per speaker and 20 min for comments)

Panel 3: Organization/Administration of Environmental Education Curricula. Faculty, students and administrators, who have experiences with one or more curriculums, will describe the different configurations of environmental education curriculums, e.g., schools, institutes, majors, minors, concentrations, individualized curriculums and their strengths and weaknesses. (ca. 10 min per speaker)

Small Group Discussions on Content and Organization/Administration/Staffing. Groups comprised of individuals from different ACS institutions will have roundtable discussions about the information and issues addressed by panels 2 and 3. Panel 4. Establishment and Maintenance of Environmental Studies. Representatives from ACS and non-ACS institutions with established environmental studies programs will relate "case histories" of the challenges and solutions that they experienced in the establishment and maintenance of their programs. They will discuss the practical problems including institutional support for staffing, recognition in decisions related to tenure and promotion, logistics, costs, and student demands and interest. (ca. 10 min per speaker) Small Group Discussions of Individual ACS Institutions. Individuals from the same (or very similar kinds of) institutions will have roundtable discussions on aspects of the workshop that they found most useful and on the kind environmental education they think should be on established on their campuses.

Reports from Small Groups of Individual ACS Institutions. A spokesperson from each group or selected groups will report to all participants a summary of their roundtable discussion including reasons for their decisions.
