Greening of the Campus

Announcing Fall Workshop at Birmingham-Southern College

October 15-17, 1998

Expecting to directly benefit from the summer curricula studies workshop being held at the University of Richmond is Birmingham-Southern College, which is currently developing a five-year comprehensive environmental studies plan. To enhance and facilitate the plan's development, Birmingham-Southern College and the Southern Environmental Center at the college will host a three day conference, "Greening of the Campus" on October 15-17, 1998. The Center serves as both a conduit and catalyst for ideas on effective resource management, by focusing on what we as individuals can do to protect the environment. The Center's successful systems approach to environmental education programs will now be extended to the upcoming Greening of the Campus conference.

The conference, for faculty, staff, and students, is designed to share success stories, test new ideas, and identify ways in which the ACS community can work collectively on preparing students for environmental citizenship in the 21st century. Specific conference workshops will focus on five areas:

  1. The Physical Plant
    • Building design ("sick vs. healthy", energy efficiency/sustainable building technology)
    • Solid and hazardous waste minimization
    • Native landscaping; composting; xeriscaping
  2. Transportation
    • Public transportation/biking/hiking trails; green space
  3. Food Service
    • Organic food provision/buying locally
    • Waste reduction; food for shelters programs
  4. Developing the Campus into an Outdoor Classroom
    • Botany walks; medicinal gardens; outdoor theatres; art walks, etc., watershed analysis, nonpoint source pollution runoff assessment
  5. Eco-Community Service Programs
    • Neighborhood cleanups; building outdoor classrooms for area schools; watershed protection programs; nature trails
    • Contributing time/expertise to community planning organizations

National speakers invited to attend include Dr. David Orr of Oberlin College, John Huie, Director of Environmental Studies at Warren Wilson College and former national director of Outward Bound, and Julian Keniry, Campus Ecology Program Coordinator for the National Wildlife Federation and author of the text Ecodemia. In addition, there will be field trips to the Little River Canyon Field School in north Alabama, Common Ground Alternative Community in Blount County, and the Belladonna Biosolids project near Birmingham.

Registration information and program agenda will be posted shortly.
