I. Environmental Program Committee (comprised of alliance directors, deans, and student affairs/operations staff)
A. Role of the Environmental Program Committee Member
- Establishes and reviews policy guidelines for the ACSEI
- Recommends such matters to the ACS Council of Academic Deans
- Offers creative ideas for joint projects, the process to be followed, outcomes and other matters
- Evaluates projects on an annual basis
- Identifies, considers and explores follow-up and "spin-off" activities for which outside funds may be raised
- Works with the project director and develops long range plans for this initiative, encompassing a long-term environmental strategy for ACS
B. Characteristics of the Position
- Non-rotating assignment
- Unpaid position
- Regular conference calls (approximately once a year)
- Occasional other calls, plus exchanges of e-mail, faxes, etc. (totaling about 5 hours a year)
II. Environmental Alliance Directors (comprised of 1-2 faculty/staff per alliance)
A. Role of the Alliance Director
- Works with alliance committee representatives, primarily via email
- Accepts proposals, forwards them to alliance committee, coordinates responses. If necessary, forwards comments to applicant with suggestions for changes to proposal
- Assists applicants with pre-proposals if necessary
- Notifies awardees; requests updates on grant expenditures; requests final reports on projects
- Keeps records of grant awards and grantee expenditures
- Communicates with Program Director as grants are awarded
- Makes annual reports on alliance activities
- Updates alliance request for proposals (rfp) annually
- Recruits proposals from appropriate students, faculty and staff, if necessary
- Facilitates communication between and among alliances
- Assists with 1 workshop or conference annually
- Acts as Program Committee member
B. Characteristics of the Position
- Appointed bi-annually
- Compensated with an annual stipend
- Works closely with Program Director
III. Environmental Alliance Representatives (comprised of 1 faculty/staff per participating institution per alliance)
A. Role of the Alliance Representative
- Works with alliance director and other committee members to accomplish alliance objectives
- Reviews grant proposals and makes suggestions for improvement as necessary
- Communicates regularly via email with alliance committee
- Recruits proposals from appropriate students, faculty and staff, if necessary
- Assists alliance director with reports of alliance-related campus activities

- Appointed bi-annually
- Unpaid position
IV. Environmental Faculty Fellows (usually one faculty member is appointed per campus; however, some campuses prefer appointing two or more co-fellows)
A. Role of the Environmental Fellow
- Collaborates with the Program Director to achieve objectives of the ACSEI
- Serves as the key spokesperson for the ACS Environmental Initiative on the campus
- Develops contacts in various departments, and brings together key players on the campus to explore cooperative environmental initiatives
- Is a catalyst to stimulate environmental and sustainable development activity on the campus, moving the campus toward the goals of the overall endeavor
- Helps with specific aspects of the project such as visiting lecturers, workshops held on campus, and utilization of outside consultants
- Works with alliance directors to coordinate information gathering and the dissemination of that information to other ACS institutions
- Recruits, hires, and supervises Student Environmental Interns
- Keeps the Program Director apprised of major environmental developments on campus (such as LEED certification, Presidents Climate Commitment or Talloires signing)
- Gathers information for a comprehensive annual report to ACS on all environmental programs and activities offered on his or her campus, including courses offered and students enrolled, info on minors and majors
- Attends one workshop per year
B. Characteristics of the Position
- Compensated with a small annual stipend, which can be split if more than one fellow is appointed
- Approximately 65 hours/year expected in this assignment (30 minutes/week for 9 months, plus one two-day weekend workshop)
V. Environmental Facilities Fellows (usually one staff member is appointed per campus)
A. Role of the Facilities Fellow
- Serves as a key staff spokesperson and as the primary contact for ACS initiatives related to campus operations
- Works closely with the Faculty Fellow and Student Interns
- Devises strategies for achieving campus best management practices in sustainability
- Is a catalyst to stimulate environmental awareness and sustainable development activity on the campus, and to promote “smart growth” (aka sustainable development)
- Collaborates with the Program Director to achieve objectives of the ACSEI
- Communicates with Facilities Fellows at other ACS campuses via listserv
B. Characteristics of the Position
- Unpaid position
- Appointed bi-annually
VI. ACS Student Environmental Interns (anywhere from 1-4 interns appointed per campus)
A. Role of the Student Environmental Intern
- Assists the ACS Faculty and Facilities Fellow in bringing the environmental project and the ACSEI to the attention of individuals and groups on campus, with an emphasis on increasing student participation
- Consults with Fellows to design and implement all projects
- In collaboration with the Faculty Fellow, Submits an annual campus plan of projects and activities to be accomplished
- Takes on an independent leadership role by developing his or her own project, activity, etc. on campus, or by directly building on whatever is currently taking place on campus. For example, developing a recycling program, conducting a campus environmental assessment, starting an environmental group, or organizing a speaker forum
- Stimulates efforts among the students and others on campus to develop projects supportive of the mission of the ACS Environmental Initiative
- Collaborates with other ACS campus student initiatives, shares information, and provides overall support to strengthen the Environmental Initiative throughout the member schools of ACS
- Works directly with campus career-planning director in exploring possibilities for career preparation, training and internships related to careers in environmental fields
- Submits a monthly email report to Program Director of activities and challenges
- Submits an annual report summarizing all environmental activities for the year, including those initiated by other groups
- Provides information, photos, and other resources for ACSEI online newsletter
B. Characteristics of the Position
- Compensated with a small stipend
- Supervised by Faculty Fellow
- Attends annual ACS workshop and/or recruits other students to attend
- Spends approximately 2 hours per week on ACS activities
